Boise State University Hosts Annual Bicycle Congress

Boise State University invites the community to learn more about alternative transportation during the annual Bicycle Congress from May 1-5. The event will feature group rides, safety clinics, and a conference, “Planning for Bicycles in Regional Transit.”

The Congress is held in conjunction with May in Motion, a Treasure Valley-wide alternative transportation awareness campaign. The Congress is receiving support from the Ada County Highway District, ACHD Commuteride, the Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho and Valley Regional Transit.

This year’s conference will feature four transportation experts from around the country. The conference is geared toward anyone with vocational, professional or academic interests in transportation planning or bicycling.

All of the events are free and open to the public. Scheduled events include:

May 1
• Wrench on the Quad:
Have your bicycle checked out by a local mechanic for wear and safety. 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Memorial Plaza on the Boise State Quad.
• Register: Register with the Boise Police Department. 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Memorial Plaza on the Boise State Quad.
• Socialize: Meet other riders and enjoy conversation and free refreshments. 4-5:15 p.m., Memorial Plaza on the Boise State Quad.
• Group ride to ACHD meeting: Join Boise State philosophy professor George Knight for a short ride to the Ada County Highway District’s Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting. Refreshments served at ACHD headquarters. Participants will receive a free copy of “Idaho Bicycling Street Smarts” and will be introduced to the ACHD Bicycle Advisory Committee. 5:15 p.m., leaving from the Boise State Quad.

May 2
• Wrench at the Rec:
A trained mechanic will be on hand to help you make minor adjustments, give technical advice and do preventive maintenance. 11 a.m.-1 p.m., REC.

May 3
• Wrench on the Quad: Have your bicycle checked out by a local mechanic for wear and safety. 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Memorial Plaza on the Boise State Quad.
• Register: Register with the Boise Police Department. 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Memorial Plaza on the Boise State Quad.
• Socialize: Meet other riders and enjoy conversation and free refreshments. 4-5:15 p.m., Memorial Plaza on the Boise State Quad.
• Group ride to Downtown/North End: Join Whitney Rearick, the Boise State University’s facilities planner, for a short ride to visit points of interest in downtown Boise and the North End. 5:15 p.m., departing from Memorial Plaza on the Boise State Quad.

May 4
• “Planning for Bicycles in Regional Transit.” Gary Barnes of the University of Minnesota, Mia Birk of Alta Planning + Design, Hillary Isebrands of Iowa State University and Chanam Lee of Texas A&M University will present papers during this conference. May 5
• Recreational ride. Join the Boise State Cycling Club for a fun group ride. Time and venue to be announced. Check www.boisestate.edu/bicyclecongress  for updates.
