EXHIBITIONS

Through April: “O Canada: An Exhibit of Canadian Books.” Books by Canadian authors and on Canadian topics will be on display in the windows outside of Special Collections on the second floor of the Albertsons Library. Books highlighting the carvings, prints and sculptures of Haida artist Robert Davidson will be featured. 8 a.m.-5 p.m, daily. Free. Call 426-1816.

Through April: “Peephole: Bachelor of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition.” Liberal Arts Building Gallery I and Hemingway Center Gallery II. 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. daily. Free. Call 426-3994.

Through May 10: “Contribution: Essence of Life.” Student Union Art Gallery, 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. This juried exhibition, presented in partnership with Boise State and the Suicide Prevention Action Network of Idaho (SPAN), features works in all media, including music, theater, literature, painting, illustration, sculpture and photography. SUNDAY, APRIL 30

Asian/Pacific Islander Awareness Month: Tibetan Festival. Special Events Center. Noon-7:30 p.m. This event is highlighted by a screening of “His Holiness the Dalai Lama Children’s Day ‘Event’ ” at 1 p.m. Additional screenings will be offered at 2:30, 3:45 and 7 p.m. $5; free for Boise State students with ID and children under 18. MONDAY, MAY 1

Music Week Concert. Timberline High School, 701 E. Boise Ave. 7:30 p.m. The Treasure Valley Concert Band, the Boise Master Chorale and the Boise Highlanders Pipes and Drums present “Raiders, Ragtime and Rivers,” as part of Boise Music Week. Free. For more Music Week events, call 375-4711.  

Qigong Class. Student Recreation Center Multi-Purpose Room 1. 4:15-5:15 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. Qigong, or “cultivating energy,” is an ancient Chinese discipline designed to teach participants how to mirror the movements of nature to help increase energy and reduce stress. $54 for REC members; 84 for nonmembers. Community Bicycle Congress. May 1-5 at various locations across campus.

Join fellow students, staff and faculty who have discovered bicycling as a satisfying and healthy alternative to the high price of fuel and the stress of gridlocked traffic. Conversations on the Uninsured in Idaho: Today and Tomorrow in the Student Union Lookout Room. Parking is free in the Student Union Visitor Lot and light refreshments will be available.
Panel Discussion, New Approaches to State Coverage, 6-7:30 p.m. James Girvan, dean of the College of Health Sciences at Boise State, will moderate a panel on recent changes in Idaho s Medicaid program, community health centers, health savings accounts, and recent expansions of insurance coverage in other states such as Massachusetts. Sponsored by the Ada County Healthy Communities Access Program and Boise State University College of Health Sciences.

Introduction to Lead Climbing. Student Recreation Center Climbing Gym. 6-8 p.m. This clinic highlights skills for leading indoor and outdoor sport climbing routes, including optimal clipping stances, proper clipping, rest techniques, lead belay techniques and enhanced communication between partners. $20. Elizabeth Foster, The Economics of Health Care in Idaho, 7-9 p.m. Foster is a family physician working at Terry Reilly Health Services in Nampa, a federally funded community health center. She served her medical residency at the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho in Boise and previously worked on economic policy and international development in Africa and Asia. Sponsored by Boise State s College of Business and Economics and the Economics Association.

Idaho Street. 5:30 p.m. Join Charles Hummel of Hummel Architects as he presents “Boise’s Buildings: Good, Bad and Ugly.” A companion workshop on community design will be presented by Jon Barrett of Idaho Smart Growth. All Campus Concert Band Performance. Student Union Special Events Center. 7:30 p.m. The All Campus Concert Band delivers a performance featuring “Sedona” by Steven Reineke; “Music from the Incredibles” by Michael Giacchino, arranged by Jay Bocook; “Bayou Breakdown” by Brant Karrick; “Motivations” by Anne McGinty; and “Prelude and Dance” by James W. FRIDAY, MAY 5

Relay For Life. Bronco Stadium. 6 p.m. May 5, 8 a.m. May 6. At this overnight relay, teams of people alternate walking or running laps to raise money for the fight against cancer. This event represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated. “Noche de Salsa.” Student Union Hatch Ballroom. 6-11 p.m. Enjoy an evening of Latino culture during the Noche de Salsa. $6, $10 per couple; $5 for students, $8 per student couple at the Student Union Info Desk. Sponsored by the Bilingual Education Student Organization. Call 426-1223.

Quartet Competition. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7 p.m. Pre-college and college-age quartets compete for cash prizes during this first-ever competition judged by the Ying String Quartet. Clay and Fire Ceramics Exhibition and Sale. Visual Arts Center Gallery I. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 6-8. The annual Clay and Fire sale features a large selection of handcrafted ceramics by students, faculty, and alumni. “Extreme Spring Fling.” Gene Harris Bandshell, Julia Davis Park. Noon-7 p.m. The Student Programs Board invites the campus community to take part in this year’s “Extreme Spring Fling.” Events include music by James Orr, All Dressed Up For Nothing and Jupiter Holiday, food vendors, and a Red Bull Half Pipe, showcasing exhibitions by BMX riders and skateboarders. “Doing Time, Doing Vipassana.” Special Events Center. 6:30 p.m. “Doing Time, Doing Vipassana” is a remarkable 52-minute documentary that profiles how Kiran Bedi, India’s inspector general of prisons, brought Vipassana, a therapeutic ancient meditation technique, to India's Tihar Prison. Boise Chamber Music Series. Egyptian Theatre, 700 W. Main Street. 8 p.m. The Boise Chamber Music Series presents a double feature with the Grammy-winning Turtle Island and Ying string quartets. Dance Showcase: Dansant R ve. Morrison Center Stage II. 7 p.m. Dansant R ve is a showcase of jazz, pointe and modern dance exclusively choreographed by Boise State Student Aidan Riordan-Buell. The performance marks the first time that a dance concert has been arranged to fulfill the senior project requirement of the Honors College. Tickets are free on a first come, first served basis. Finals Relief Whitewater Rafting Trip Registration Deadline. Payette River. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The Outdoor Programs Office invites the campus community to relive the stress of finals week with a day of whitewater rafting on the Payette River.
