Boise State Hosts Spring Commencement May
13
Boise State will hand out its first doctorate in geophysics when it hosts
its 78th Commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 13, in Taco Bell
Arena. Doors will open at 9 a.m. No tickets are needed for family and guests
to attend.
Free parking will be available at all reserved and metered parking lots.
Because of limited handicapped parking, family and friends who cannot walk
to the Taco Bell Arena can be dropped off at the front of Entrance 1, where
volunteers will assist them with elevators, etc., while drivers park their
cars.
Ralph R. Peterson, a 1965 alumnus, will be presented with an honorary
doctorate during the ceremony. Peterson is chairman, president and CEO of
CH2M Hill, a global project delivery company based in Denver, with annual
revenue of $3 billion and 18,000 employees worldwide. As CEO, Peterson has
earned praise for his company’s role in promoting the environment through
its cleanup work and other environment-related projects.
In addition, Greg Oldenborger will receive Boise State’s first-ever Ph.D.
The degree in geophysics is one of four doctoral programs now offered by
the university. In addition, the ceremony includes the hooding of two Ed.D.
candidates: Barbara Schroeder and Kerry Rice.
Approximately 1,100 students are expected to attend the ceremony, which
includes a joint address by twin graduates Josie and Texie Evans on
diversity and unity on campus. In all, 1,653 students have qualified for
graduation since the December Commencement, earning a total of 1,722 degrees
or certificates. The ceremony will include two large screens that will
broadcast the graduates accepting their degrees so that those sitting
farther away from the stage will be able to see individual graduates up
close.
On Friday, May 12, graduates and their families are invited to join Boise
State faculty and staff at the graduation barbecue hosted by the Alumni
Association from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Student Union parking lot.
Graduates receive two free tickets; additional tickets are $5 and can be
purchased at the Student Union Information Desk.
The celebration will feature music, children’s games, a jumphouse and other
festivities. Also, take a spin on the Wheel of Games for a chance to win
free prizes. For more information about the barbecue, contact the Boise
State Alumni Association at 426-1698.
