Boise State Awards Apprentice Graduation Certificates
Nampa, Caldwell, Boise students earn top honors
Eighty-three students who just completed their studies in Boise State
University’s Selland College of Applied Technology secured high-paying jobs
four years ago. Among them are electricians, plumbers, sheet metal
technicians and brick/stone masons.
The students spent four years earning their certificates, which were awarded
on April 27 in the Boise State Student Union, from the apprenticeship
program in the Center for Workforce Training. Students enrolled in the
program attend evening classes at Boise State to study the theory of the
trade and then practice what they have learned at work the next day, in
their full-time, paid jobs. Each student is supervised at work by a seasoned
journeyman with years of experience in the field.
“There has never been a better time to enter these professions,” said Stan
Brings, Center for Workforce Training director. “By 2012 the U.S. Department
of Labor expects a nationwide shortage of at least 10 million skilled
workers due to the pending retirements of many trades workers (whose average
age is 57). The pay and benefits in these fields are excellent.”
In addition to the graduate certificates presented at the April 27 ceremony,
Danny Smith, who works for Power Electric in Boise, was named instructor of
the year. Top plumbing student awards were presented to Preston Prawitz of
Emmett and Steven Ward of Meridian. The following students were named top
electrical students of the year: Tate Borstelman of Boise; Lisa Hotchkiss of
Caldwell; George Glasscock of Nampa; and Patrick Hunter of Caldwell.
