Boise State University President Bob Kustra announced today the appointment of Michael Laliberte as Vice President for Student Affairs, effective July 1. The position oversees all student affairs programs and activities for Idaho’s largest university with 18,600 students.

Laliberte has more than 10 years of progressively responsible experiences in a wide array of student affairs positions. Laliberte joins Boise State from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth where he was Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs since January 2003. He also served as Associate Dean of Students from 1999-2003 and Coordinator for Student Judicial Affairs in 1999.

“I am confident that our campus community will be impressed by Michael’s strong advocacy of students,” Kustra said. “His track record suggests that he will join with us in continuing to build a strong sense of community among our students. His leadership will help us improve student success, especially in retention and graduation rates. I am also anxious to rely on Michael’s leadership in increasing residential and learning opportunities on campus to create the very best experience for our students.”

Laliberte’s responsibilities at Boise State will include leadership for 20 units and direct supervision of eight departments: Career Center; Bookstore; Student Housing; Student Union and Activities; Campus Recreation; Enrollment Services; Health, Wellness and Counseling Services; and Dean of Students. Laliberte replaces Mark Wheeler, who has been serving in the dual role of Boise State’s Interim Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Enrollment Services since last May.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to come to Boise State at such an important time in its growth as a metropolitan research university. I look forward to working in partnership with the administrative team and the dedicated staff that I have already met,” Laliberte said. “Our goal is to create the preeminent student affairs program in the country. My philosophy has always been to put the students first. Together I believe we can foster a thriving and vibrant campus community.”

At UMass Dartmouth, Laliberte has been the co-director and developer of the COMPASS (Community of Motivated Persons Actively Seeking Scholarship) Learning Community Program, which links first-year students with undeclared majors through a commonly themed syllabus. He has also designed and taught a course that educates students on becoming peer mentors. Other professional accomplishments include successfully marketing and filling 800 new residence hall beds in less than one academic year and serving as the only student affairs representative on a committee for a $90 million building project for six new residence halls and a Commons Building.

His career higher education experience also includes Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., as the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Judicial Affairs from 1996-99; Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pa., as the Coordinator-Residence Life from 1994-96; and Northeastern University in Boston, as the Residence Director in 1994.

Laliberte completed his Ed.D. in educational leadership in higher education from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., in 2003. He earned a master of science degree in college student development and counseling from Northeastern in 1994 and a bachelor of science degree in human development, counseling and family studies from the University of Rhode Island in Kingston in 1983.
