A Boise State University string quartet took home first prize at the inaugural Boise Chamber Music Society String Quartet Competition on May 5 at the Morrison Center Recital Hall.

The internationally known Ying Quartet served as judges for the collegiate and pre-collegiate rounds and chose the Boise State String Quartet as the Dee Harris Grand Prize winner. Anna-Marie Hladik, violin; Becky Green, violin; Henry Olvera, viola; and Aaron King, cello, competed against two other college quartets during the final round of competition. The Boise State quartet is directed by music professor Craig Purdy.

The first prize winner in the pre-college round was the Timberline String Quartet, featuring Katelyn Westergard and Tanya Dorsey, violins; Garret Ma, viola; and Jake Saunders, cello. They were coached by Timberline High School teacher Phyllis Saunders.

The Albertson College String Quartet and the Seleman Quartet from Centennial High School received second prizes. They were coached by David Johnson and Marcie von Huene, respectively. Other finalists included the Animae Quartet, coached by Boise State professor Linda Kline Lamar, and the Presto Quartet from Centennial High School.

The winning quartets played in the lobby of the Egyptian Theatre during the May 6 Boise Chamber Music Society concert featuring the Turtle Island String Quartet and the Ying Quartet.
