Idaho Center for the Book Recognized for Innovative Reading
Promotion Projects
The Idaho Center for the Book, housed at Boise State University and directed
by English professor Tom Trusky, recently won a Boorstin Award in
recognition of its innovative reading promotion projects.
The ICB, one of five state centers that received the award, will take home a
$1,000 cash stipend. The money to support the award was donated to the
Center for the Book by Ruth F. Boorstin, wife of former librarian of
Congress Daniel J. Boorstin, who established the national Center for the
Book in 1977.
The ICB was honored for its “exceptionally creative” book arts program,
which includes “Booker’s Dozen,” a biennial traveling exhibition of books
created by Idahoans. The ICB also was honored for “Idaho Authors!,” an
educational card game for the entire family. Other Boorstin Award winners
include Centers for the Book in Alabama, North Carolina, West Virginia and
Wyoming.
The Center for the Book was created by law in 1977 as a public-private
partnership to use the resources of the Library of Congress to stimulate
public interest in books and reading. The Library pays salaries of the
center’s staff, but all program and other expenses must be supported by
contributions from the private sector.
Between 1984 and 2002, all 50 states and the District of Columbia created
statewide affiliates that carry the Center for the Book’s mission to the
state and local level. State affiliates provide their own financial and
in-kind support and must apply for renewal every three years.
