Boise State Offers Community and Regional Planning Certificate

Following recent approval by the State Board of Education, Boise State University will offer a certificate program in community and regional planning beginning in fall 2006. The graduate program, the only one of its kind in Idaho, is designed to assist working professionals and students in understanding and responding to community needs in planning.

Offered through the Department of Public Policy and Administration, the program will focus on a general understanding of the elements and current practices in planning, as well as technical skills needed by practicing planners. Course topics include community and regional planning, intergovernmental relations, geographic information systems, land development, negotiation theory and practice and conflict intervention methods.

“The graduate certificate in Community and Regional Planning will begin to address the needs and concerns for community and regional planning that are underscored by the unprecedented growth we are experiencing,” said program director Susan Mason. “This program will benefit our communities in terms of planning and development now and into the future.”

“This is our first step in helping the Treasure Valley — and Idaho — meet one of its most pressing growth challenges,” said Michael Blankenship, dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs. “It will also help Boise State fulfill its mission of becoming a metropolitan research university of distinction.”

Prospective students must be admitted to a graduate program at Boise State. Fall admission deadline is June 9. For more information, visit http://ppa.boisestate.edu/planning   or call (208) 426-2658.
