Paige Ackerson-Kiely of Lincoln, Vermont, is the 2006 winner of the Sawtooth Poetry Prize. The $1,500 Sawtooth Prize is given annually by Ahsahta Press, Boise State University’s poetry press.

Ackerson-Kiely’s book, “In No One’s Land,” will be published by Ahsahta in January. Her manuscript was chosen by D.A. Powell, whose book “Cocktails” was a finalist for the National Book Critics’ Circle Award in Poetry. Powell chose Ackerson-Kiely’s book from about 500 entries, 24 of which were finalists for the prize.

Ackerson-Kiely is a graduate of the University of New Mexico and the Vermont College MFA Program for Writers. Her poems have appeared in the literary magazines jubilat and Ninth Letter, as well as “Pleiades” and the “Bellingham Review,” among others. She was recently named the recipient of the 2006 Poets and Writers Exchange Award.

In addition to Ackerson-Kiely’s manuscript, Ahsahta Press will publish two finalist manuscripts: “Irresponsibility” by Chris Vitiello of Durham, N.C., and “Realm Sixty-Four” by Kristi Maxwell of Tuscon, Ariz. The 2007 Sawtooth Poetry Prize contest, which will run from Jan. 1 to March 1, will be judged by poet and scholar Peter Gizzi, author of “Some Values of Landscape and Weather” and “The House that Jack Built.”

Other finalists include Kristin Bock, Ken Chen, Shira Dentz, Kirk Davis, Maryrose Larkin, Chloe Joan Lopez, Amy McNamara, Sandra Meek, Mary Molinary, Martie McCleery Palar, Donna de la Perriere, Marthe Reed, Andrea Rexilius, Lori Shine, Lytton Smith, Elizabeth Senja Spackman, Connie Voisine, Daneen Wardrop and Joshua Marie Wilkinson.

Ahsahta Press, which is named for the Mandan word for “Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep,” was founded in 1974. The press publishes five books of poetry every year, one of which is the winner of the Sawtooth Poetry Prize. Ahsahta Press is directed by Janet Holmes, a professor at Boise State who teaches poetry in the MFA program.
