the 7-8 p.m. hour broadcast live on Idahos Jazz Station.
June 1 will feature Billy Mitchell and the John Jones Jazz Band.
July 6 will feature Chuck Smith and New Trio Plus.
Aug. 3 will feature the Brad Peters Sextet.
Sept. 7 will feature special guest artist Denise Perrier with the Frim Fram
Fellas.
Billy Mitchell came from a musical family in Montana. After graduating from
the University of Montana, Mitchell moved to Boise and started to raise his
family. His love of jazz always kept him within jazz circles and performing.
With the addition of Gene Harris to Boises jazz mix in the late 70s, Billy
started his long association with Harris. Although a banker by day, his
first love has always been jazz performance and education. He has performed
every year at the Gene Harris Jazz Festival and is a regular at the Swing N
Dixie Jazz Jamboree in Sun Valley. He also performs with the Capital City
Jazz Band. He has performed with such notable jazz artists as Red Holloway,
Paul Tillotson, Ernie Watts, Arturo Sandoval and Chuck Mangione.
Boise resident Chuck Smith is active throughout the Northwest as both a jazz
pianist and a music educator. He currently works as a music educator in the
Boise schools and as an adjunct piano faculty at Boise State University.
Smith performed throughout the world as musical director for Paul Anka for
eight years. He conducted for Anka at many notable functions, including
appearances at the Reagan White House and with the Atlanta Symphony. As a
pianist, Smith has played with the Jazz Under the Stars series, the
Riverside Jazz Orchestra and a host of other jazz artists. His recordings
include New Territory, an on-going project he co-leads with Sandon Mayhew,
and Baker Sings Out, a project he arranged and recorded for Jeff Baker.
Denise Perrier is an actress, cabaret singer and one of the premier Jazz
vocalists in the San Francisco Bay Area. She performs regularly at the
better clubs, restaurants, cabarets, and festivals around town and around
the country. Critics write: Artistic integrity is the aspect of the
sincerity you hear in Denises singing. She does very little scat singing,
if any. That kind of exhibitionism (Look what I can do) is foreign to her
style, and The lady is a class act.
Jazz Straight Ahead with Janie Harris is heard every Saturday at 8 p.m. on
KBSU-FM and every Sunday at 11 a.m. on Idahos Jazz Station.
Idahos Jazz Station is a service of Boise State Radio and airs in
partnership with the College of Southern Idaho on KEZJ-AM 1450, Twin Falls.
Idahos Jazz Station is also heard on KBSU-AM 730, Boise and KBSK-FM 89.9
