Symposium to Look at Civil Liberties in Wartime, Focusing on Minidoka Internment Experience

A two-day symposium titled “Civil Liberties in Wartime” will be held July 6-7 at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls. The workshop is free; Boise State University college credits are available by calling (208) 4261709 or (800) 824-7017.

The symposium will focus on issues of civil liberties and constitutional rights, spanning from Japanese American cases in WWII to current challenges of balancing national security and the protection of civil liberties. Speakers include:

Amy Herzfeld, executive director, Idaho Human Rights Education Center
Frank Kitamoto, president, Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community

David Nevin, attorney, Boise, Idaho
Karen Yoshitomi, regional director, Japanese American Citizens League
Robert Sims, emeritus professor, Boise State University

The event precedes the annual pilgrimage of former internees of the Minidoka Japanese American internment camp and their family and friends.
