Thirty-five Idaho Undergraduates Awarded Summer Fellowships to Conduct Biomedical Research

Boise State senior and INBRE fellow Alonzo Rivas uses an inoculating loop to

that is related to the plague. Rivas is working in the lab of Boise State
biology professor Juliette Tinker on research that could someday lead to the
development of a vaccine for the deadly disease.

The Idaho IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence has awarded 35 summer research fellowships to undergraduate students currently enrolled in seven colleges and universities across Idaho.

The INBRE fellows received scholarly awards of up to $5,000 to conduct biomedical research at Boise State University, Albertson College of Idaho, Idaho State University, Northwest Nazarene University and the University of Idaho. In addition to students enrolled in those schools, other participants are from Brigham Young University-Idaho and North Idaho College.

As part of the 10-week program, the students are working with experienced research scientists and attending seminar presentations. They will present their results at the annual INBRE research conference in Coeur D’Alene Aug. 6-8. The Idaho INBRE program is funded by a five-year, $16.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

“It’s a great opportunity. Conducting hands-on work in the lab makes what I’ve learned in the classroom much more understandable and relevant,” said Boise State senior and INBRE fellow Alonzo Rivas. Rivas, who is from Ashton, is working with Boise State biology professor Juliette Tinker on research that could someday lead to the development of a vaccine for the plague.

This is the second year that Rivas has received an INBRE fellowship to work in Tinker’s lab. “It feels really good to be working on research that has the potential to someday be used to help save lives,” said Rivas, who hopes to earn a Ph.D. in microbiology and conduct medical research.

Carolyn Hovde Bohach, Idaho INBRE director and UI professor of microbiology, said the fellows benefit both now and in the long term because of their summer research experience. They learn the intricacies of a working research laboratory. They also interact with other students and scientists more closely than they normally would in a laboratory course or classroom.

“They get to experience the excitement of asking questions we don’t know the answers to, and then, with hard work and luck, finding those answers,” Bohach said.
