News Release June 15, 2006Former Boise State Student Body President Awarded Fulbright Fellowship to Do Research in Amman, JordanAli Ishaq, a 2004 Boise State University graduate and former student body president, has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to spend a year in Amman, Jordan. Ishaq will leave in August to begin researching the role of Islamic law in progressive social change movements, particularly women’s movements and democratic movements in the Arabic-speaking Middle East. Ishaq earned a political science degree with an emphasis in international relations while at Boise State and is currently working as a financial analyst for the Wells Fargo Southern Idaho Regional Commercial Banking Office. The purpose of the Fulbright program is to foster leadership, learning and empathy between cultures, and the program is open to students, scholars and professionals. Ishaq said numerous mentors at Boise State, including Marcy Newman, an English professor who is now completing her Fulbright Fellowship in Jordan, Peter Lichtenstein, an economics professor and former Fulbright Scholar, Ross Burkhart, a political science professor, and Sabine Klahr, director of Boise State’s International Programs office and a Fulbright Scholar, were instrumental in his successful application. “Too many Boise State students automatically dismiss these kinds of opportunities,” Ishaq said. “BSU students need to realize that not only should they actively pursue such scholarships and fellowships, it is absolutely possible for them to get them.” -30- Contact: Ali Ishaq, Wells Fargo Commercial Banking, (208) 393-2063 or (208) 447-6238Media Contact: Sherry Squires, University Communications, (208) 426-1563, ssquires@boisestate.eduJuly 12 is the deadline for degree-seeking students to submit admission materials to Boise State University for the fall 2006 semester.
