Poetry lovers now have a new way to get a steady supply of books, courtesy
of Boise State University’s Ahsahta Press.
Ahsahta, which is an all-poetry publisher, is starting a subscription
service that will deliver six titles of new poetry per year to subscribers.
The deliveries will arrive in September, January and March of each year. A
subscription costs $60, a savings of $36, and subscribers also will receive
a free book from Ahsahta’s backlist.
The 2006-2007 subscription will include a September shipment of books by
Aaron McCollough, author of “Welkin,” which was published by Ahsahta in
2002, as well as by new author Kate Greenstreet. The press also will publish
first books by Paige Ackerson-Kiely, winner of the 2006 Sawtooth Poetry
Prize, and by Susan Briante. Lisa Fishman, whose “Dear, Read,” was published
by Ahsahta in 2003, will have a new book, “The Happiness Experiment.” Susan
Tichy, author of three previous books, will publish “Bone Pagoda,” works
about the Vietnam War, in 2007.
The subscription service bridges a gap for book buyers, said Ahsahta Press
director Janet Holmes.
“Many bookstores just don’t stock much poetry, and what they do have for
sale tends to be books by very few very well-known writers,” Holmes said.
“The traditional distribution methods don’t do a good job of getting new,
young and relatively unknown poets into the stores.”
Ahsahta, the Mandan word for “Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep,” was founded at
Boise State University in 1974 and now publishes six books of poetry per
year, one of which is the winner of its annual Sawtooth Poetry Prize. For
