Associated Students of Boise State University Creates 'Textbook Library'

The Associated Students of Boise State University opened the school’s first-ever "textbook library" this week. The library, which is housed at Albertsons Library, will be a resource for students who cannot afford to pay for their own textbooks.

Taylor Newbold, ASBSU’s secretary of public relations and the coordinator for the textbook library, said that the new project is meant help students who might find themselves in unfortunate circumstances. Newbold stressed that the library is not meant as a way for students to avoid paying for their textbooks, however.

Newbold said that ASBSU is seeking donations of the free editions that are often sent to professors by publishing companies.

"The growth of the textbook library cannot continue without the help of all instructors who want to ensure the success of their students, and without the pressure of students to ensure that their instructors provide them with available textbooks when possible," Newbold said.

Faculty may donate new or old editions of textbooks at any time of the school year, and there is no limit on donations. The books will be placed on reserve at the library and there will be a time limit on how long they may be checked out by students. A book may be donated by giving it to the reserve section of the library; by bringing the textbook to ASBSU’s office in the Student Union; or by arranging for a pick up.
