Aug. 21, 2006 Japanese Papermakers to Display Traditional Methods at Boise State University Papermakers Hironao and Osamu Hamada will demonstrate traditional Japanese methods during "Wa: Art of Japanese Papermaking," at 2 p.m. Sept. 12 in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom C at Boise State University. Admission is free but reservations are requested; call (208) 426-1060 by Sept. 10 to R.S.V.P. The Hamadas will be joined by Hiromi Katayama, president of Hiromi Paper International in Santa Monica, Calif., and Hirokazu Kosaka, director of visual arts and curator of the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in Los Angeles. Katayama will give a lecture to begin the event, and Kosaka will lead a conversation about the papermaking methods. Following that presentation, the Hamadas will give a demonstration in room 106 of the new Fine Arts Building, located in the Capitol Village complex on University Drive. Hironao and Osamu Hamada are brothers from the Kochi prefecture on the island of Shikoku in Japan, where the mountainous, forested terrain provides vegetation such as paper mulberry (kozo) and edgeworthia payrifera (mitsumata), which are used to make paper, or washi. The Hamadas studied with their grandfather, Sajio Hamada, a master of the Tengucho style of papermaking. At one time more than 100 artisans created Tengucho style paper, but now only Hironao Hamada creates it. Osamu Hamada creates paper in the rakusui-shi and kozo-shi styles. The demonstration is presented by Boise State, the Japan Foundation of Los Angeles and organized by Hiromi Paper International and the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center.
