Boise State Volunteer Services Board
Presents Healthcare Issues Awareness Week Events
The Boise State University Volunteer Services Board will present a week of
discussions, lectures and films as part of Healthcare Issues Awareness Week,
Oct. 9-12. The following events are free and open to the public:
• Atlanta Gold Mine Issue Panel Discussion. 7-9 p.m. Oct. 9, Student Union
Jordan Ballroom B. Panelists from the Idaho Conservation League, Trout
Unlimited, the Boise Forest Service, the Atlanta Gold Corporation, the Idaho
Mining Association and the Department of Environmental Quality will be on hand
to discuss the proposed gold mine near Atlanta, Idaho. The panel will be
moderated by Boise State professor Uwe Reischl of the Department of Community
and Environmental Health.
• “Why Donate Blood?” 12:30-2 p.m. Oct. 10, Student Union Hatch Ballroom A and
B. Learn about the blood donation process and about the work of the American Red
Cross.
• Blood drive. 9 a.m-2:30 p.m. Oct. 11, Student Union Jordan Ballroom A and B.
• “Did You Know About AIDS?” 7-9 p.m. Oct. 11, Student Union Hatch Ballroom C
and D. Screening of “A Closer Walk,” a film about mankind’s confrontation with
the AIDS epidemic that features Dr. Paul Farmer of the book “Mountains Beyond
Mountains” and the organization Partners in Health. Followed by a discussion led
by Dr. Clay Roscoe, HIV fellow of Family Residency of Idaho, and Amy Herzfeld,
of the Idaho Human Rights Education Center.
• “Go Beyond the Print!” 6-8:30 p.m. Oct. 12, Student Union Hatch Ballroom C and
D. Screening of “Rx for Survival: A Global Health Challenge,” featuring Farmer
and others who are changing the world of healthcare. Followed by a discussion
led by Dr. Karl Watts, co-founder of the Garden City Community Clinic, and Dr.
Waj Nasser, who has volunteered his services in places such as Africa and Haiti.
