Author and Attorney Bill Colby to Speak at Boise
State About End-of-life Issues
Author and attorney Bill Colby will discuss complicated end-of-life issues from
11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Student Union Jordan B Ballroom. Colby’s
appearance coincides with the release of statewide survey results examining
end-of-life issues in Idaho. Colby’s presentation is free and open to the
public.
Colby represented the family of Nancy Cruzan in the first right-to-die case
heard by the United States Supreme Court and is currently a senior fellow of the
National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. In his presentation, “From
Cruzan to Schiavo: What Have We Learned,” Colby will examine the difficult
choices families face before and after the death of a loved one.
Colby is the author of “Unplugged: Reclaiming Our Right to Die in America” and
“Long Goodbye: The Deaths of Nancy Cruzan.” He travels across the country
speaking about end-of-life issues and has appeared on programs such as “Good
Morning America,” CNN, MSNBC, “Larry King Live” and “Today.”
The presentation will analyze medical and legal facts of right-to-die cases,
various kinds of advance directives and changes in medical technology, and the
law that created the current legal/medical environment.
On the morning of Colby’s presentation, results from a statewide end-of-life
survey will be released at a 10a.m. press conference in the Student Union Jordan
B Ballroom. The survey, completed by A Better Way Coalition and the Boise State
Center for the Study of Aging, provides data on the attitudes, preferences and
behaviors of people in Idaho 35 years old and older. The project generated
information to support and inform policy initiatives, professional training,
outreach to the public and other activities that will contribute to improved
end-of-life care in Idaho.
Colby’s appearance is sponsored by the Idaho State Hospice Organization with A
Better Way Coalition: Life on Our Own Terms, Boise State Center for the Study of
Aging, Idaho Health Care Association and the National Hospice and Palliative
Care Organization.
