Boise State University Tackles One of Today's Hottest Issues
During 'Same-Sex Marriage: A Civil Debate'
Same-sex marriage has been debated everywhere from town halls to Capitol Hill,
and now the debate is coming to Boise State University during “Same-Sex
Marriage: A Civil Debate” at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Student Union Jordan
Ballroom. Admission is free.
“Same-Sex Marriage: A Civil Debate” features Glenn Stanton and John Corvino, two
nationally known experts with opposing views. Stanton is the senior analyst for
marriage and sexuality and the director of social research and cultural affairs
at Focus on the Family. Stanton has authored or contributed to several books,
including “Why Marriage Matters: Reasons to Believe in Marriage in Postmodern
Society” and “Marriage on Trial: The Case Against Same-Sex Marriage and
Parenting.” He is a consultant to the Bush administration about increasing
fathers’ involvement in Head Start.
Corvino is a philosophy professor at Wayne State University in Detroit and is
the editor of “Same Sex: Debating the Ethics, Science and Culture of
Homosexuality.” His articles have appeared in the national media, at the online
Independent Gay Forum, and in scholarly anthologies such as “Do We Need Minority
Rights?”
Corvino and Stanton hold opposite views but are committed to civil discourse.
They have debated each other around the country, and their arguments have become
more refined at each appearance.
“Same-Sex Marriage: A Civil Debate” is co-sponsored by Boise State University,
the University of Idaho and Idaho State University. The debate will travel to
the University of Idaho at 8 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Student Union Ballroom, and to
Idaho State at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Student Union Ballroom.
