BSU Talkin' Broncos Leave Opponents
Speechless at CSI Tourney
The Boise State University
debate and speech team kicked off the 2006-07 season by winning the College of
Southern Idaho’s Golden Eagle Invitational Tournament. The Talkin’ Broncos
captured the CSI title for the sixth consecutive year, and the eighth time in
the nine-year history of the competition. College debate teams from Idaho,
Oregon, Montana and Utah competed in the event, held Sept. 22-23 in Twin Falls.
Boise State rolled up 132 team points to outdistance Oregon’s Linfield College,
with 57 points. Northwest Nazarene University finished third with 54 points.
Katy Jibben (senior, Boise) led the way for Boise State, winning both Persuasive
Speaking and Informative Speaking, finishing third in Program Oral
Interpretation, and teaming with debate partner Sean Watson (junior, Kimberly)
to win the novice division of Parliamentary Debate, posting a perfect 7-0
record.
Team co-captains Barton Jackson (senior, Eagle) and Wayne Rysavy (senior,
Ramstein, Germany) won a combined nine awards. Jackson took top honors in Speech
to Entertain, second in Informative Speaking, third in Extemporaneous Speaking
and fourth in Persuasive Speaking. Rysavy won both Rhetorical Analysis and
Program Oral Interpretation and placed sixth in Impromptu Speaking. Other
multiple award winners for the Talkin’ Broncos were Jordan Park (sophomore,
Idaho Falls), third in both Persuasive Speaking and Speech to Entertain; and
Travis Walker (freshman, Idaho Falls), fourth in Persuasive Speaking, and fifth
in both Informative Speaking and Impromptu Speaking. Jennifer Manship (freshman,
Idaho Falls) placed second in Poetry Interpretation and Chad Judy (junior, Idaho
Falls) finished second in Program Oral Interpretation to round out Boise State’s
scoring in the speech events.
In the open division of debate, three Boise State teams finished in a four-way
tie for fifth place: Rysavy and Walker, Park and Tyler Leatham (freshman,
Pocatello) and Jackson and Regan Charlton (freshman, Inkom).
The Boise State team returns to competition in three weeks when they travel to
Portland, Ore., for the Lewis and Clark College Invitational Tournament.
