Boise State Names UNLV's Rudin as
Vice President for Research
A higher education administrator and health physics scientist with Idaho ties
has been named vice president for research at Boise State University, officials
announced today.
Mark Rudin, currently the interim vice president for research and graduate dean
at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, will join Boise State on Jan. 1 as vice
president for research. His hiring, pending State Board of Education approval,
includes a professorship in health physics with a joint appointment in the
departments of Geosciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Community and
Environmental Health.
“Our aspirations as a metropolitan research university have received a
tremendous boost with Mark Rudin accepting the important role as vice president
for research,” said Boise State President Bob Kustra. “His abilities as a
scientist, teacher and administrator will serve Boise State well in this
critical juncture in the university’s growth. We are fortunate to attract an
individual who has direct experience and success in developing and expanding
research programs.”
Rudin joined UNLV in 1993 and served in a number of teaching and administrative
positions with increasing and diverse responsibilities. Prior to serving in his
current position in UNLV’s Division of Research and Graduate Studies (DRGS), he
was senior associate vice president for research services and chair of the
Department of Health Physics.
As the top administrator with DRGS, Rudin was responsible for the management of
a unit comprised of approximately 125 divisional administrators and research
faculty and staff, about 650 graduate faculty and about 6,000 graduate students,
with an annual budget in the range of $105 million.
Before joining UNLV, Rudin was a technical/administrative assistant with the
U.S. Department of Energy Headquarters, Office of Environmental Restoration and
Waste Management, and from 1989 to 1993 he was a senior program
specialist/project engineer with EG&G Idaho at the Idaho National Laboratory in
Idaho Falls.
From 1990 to 1992 he was also an instructor in the Department of Health Physics
at Idaho State University, where he taught and developed the curriculum for two
courses — environmental health physics and radiation instrumentation.
Rudin replaces Jack Pelton, dean of Boise State’s Graduate College who has
served as interim vice president for research since 2005. Boise State received
$23.8 million for externally funded research and sponsored projects for the
fiscal year that ended June 30 — the second highest total in the university’s
history. Cancer studies, wind energy research, watershed investigations and bird
migration surveys are just a few of the many research projects funded in fiscal
year 2006.
“I was very impressed by the quality of the faculty and staff during my visit to
campus,” Rudin said. “I look forward to working with President Kustra and the
entire university community to further advance the research mission at Boise
State.”
During Rudin’s three years as UNLV’s interim vice president for research, total
sponsored program funding at the university increased from $59 million to $95
million (a 61 percent increase) and total research funding increased from $31
million to $69 million (a 123 percent hike).
Rudin received his Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry, his master’s degree in health
physics and his bachelor’s degree in general health science, all from Purdue
University.
