Boise State Talkin' Broncos Win
10th Consecutive Tourney
The Boise State University debate and speech team ran its winning streak to 10
consecutive tournaments, dominating a field of 31 schools from eight states to
win the Lewis and Clark College Pioneer Invitational Tournament in Portland,
Ore., Oct. 12 - 15. The Talkin’ Broncos rolled up 192 team points to outdistance
runner-up University of Oregon’s 120 points. Utah State University placed third
with 102 points and Pacific University was fourth with 70.
Boise State had six competitors who scored in double figures, with co-captains
Katy Jibben (senior, Boise) and Barton Jackson (senior, Eagle) leading the way.
Jibben had 36 points and won both Persuasive Speaking and Informative Speaking.
She also placed third in Speech to Entertain, fifth in Program Oral
Interpretation and teamed with Sean Watson (sophomore, Kimberly) to take second
in the novice division of Debate. Jackson scored 28 points with a first-place
finish in Impromptu Speaking, a second in Extemporaneous Speaking, a third in
Informative Speaking and a fifth in Speech to Entertain.
Boise State’s other double-digit scorers were: Chad Judy (junior, Idaho Falls),
who won both Impromptu Speaking and Program Oral Interpretation, and placed
fifth in Informative Speaking; Regan Charlton (freshman, Inkom), who placed
first in Extemporaneous Speaking, second in Informative Speaking and third in
Persuasive Speaking; Wayne Rysavy (senior, Ramstein, Germany), who was first in
Rhetorical Analysis, fourth in Program Oral Interpretation, fourth in Impromptu
Speaking, and who teamed with Travis Walker (freshman, Idaho Falls) to place
fifth in Debate; and Watson, who was second in Rhetorical Analysis, third in
Extemporaneous Speaking and sixth in Speech to Entertain.
The Lewis & Clark tournament is one of the largest intercollegiate tournaments
held in the Western United States. Colleges and Universities from California,
Colorado, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, Utah and Washington participated in
the three-day competition.
Boise State’s 10-tournament winning streak extends back to February 2005 and
includes the 2006 Great West Regional Championship and the 2005 Pi Kappa Delta
National Championship.
The Talkin’ Broncos travel to Shreveport, La., next month for the Red River
Swing, co-hosted by Louisiana Tech and Louisiana State University.
