Boise State Students Enter Camera Phone Photography and Video Contest Sponsored by Micron Technology

Twenty Boise State University business students and 20 students from Drexel University in Pennsylvania will vie for cash prizes and an all expense-paid trip to Barcelona, Spain, as part of a contest sponsored by Micron Technology Inc. to showcase the photography potential of today’s camera phones.

The “Micron Mobile Theater Contest” challenges student teams to capture the extraordinary, inspirational and intriguing in single-frame shots and continuous video, using cell phones designed with Micron memory and image sensors.

Five teams of four students from BSU and the same number from Drexel University are participating in the contest. The BSU students reside in the College of Business and Economics residential college in Keiser Hall, and operate “Dawson’s 4.0,” an entirely student-run coffee shop located in the lobby of the Multipurpose Classroom Building.

Micron is providing each team with four phones that feature its imaging and memory technology, including a VGA, a 1.3-megapixel, a 2-megapixel and a 3-megapixel phone. Each team member will be asked to capture one video clip and one still image with their phone.

“It’s pretty cool. I’m interested in international business, so I’m really excited about the international aspect of the contest and the possibility of getting to go to Barcelona,” said Sonia Trevizo, a Boise State freshman who lives in Keiser Hall.

Added Boise State freshman Matt Dalley, another contestant, “I’m getting a chance to use my creativity. Plus I really like getting a free cell phone.”

The winning four-member team, to be announced in January, will receive an all expense-paid trip to Barcelona, Spain, where they will display their winning entries in Micron’s booth at the 3GSM World Conference Feb. 13-17. Additionally, each winning team member will be presented with a monetary prize of $1,250.

Boise State and Drexel were chosen for the contest based on their relationship with Micron’s university outreach programs. Three guest judges will select the winning team, subjectively rating on creativity, uniqueness, execution, humor and impact of each video clip and still photo. The judging panel includes Mike McNamara, executive technology editor for Popular Photography & Imaging magazine; Rick Decker, a professional photographer; and a Micron imaging executive.

“We are encouraging these students to use their imagination and creativity to maximize the mobile imaging innovations designed into today’s camera phones,” said Bob Gove, vice president of Micron’s imaging group. “As the camera phone imaging leader, we are advancing the picture quality of today’s camera-equipped mobile phones. While the contest is designed to demonstrate the photographic and video capabilities of today’s mobile phones, it also provides a unique perspective to how our technology impacts camera phone imaging.”

The Micron contest provides a great opportunity for Boise State business students to learn firsthand about marketing and promotion, as well as about a major corporation headquartered in Boise, added Paul Bahnson, chair of the Accountancy Department and faculty in residence at the COBE residential college.

“They’ll also get a chance to experience some new technology’” Bahnson said. The contest also provides the students, who run Dawson’s 4.0 coffee shop and live in the COBE residential dorm, another opportunity to work together. Regardless of which team wins, students can gain rewards just by participating, Bahnson added.
