Anthropology Lecture Addresses Return of the Hochunk to Former Reservation Site

Sheryl and Bruce Dowlin, professors emeriti at Minnesota State University, will speak as guests of the Boise State University Department of Anthropology’s Friends of Anthropology. The Dowlins will speak and present a slideshow on “The Return of the Hochunk: Reconciliation After 142 Years” at 3 p.m. Nov. 8 in the Student Union Jordan A Ballroom. The event is free. Call 426-3023 for more information.

The Dowlins’ remarks center on the 2005 return of the Hochunk (also called Winnebago) tribe to their former reservation site in Mankato, Minn. Unexpected discoveries led to an emotional reconciliation between area whites and the Hochunk, who had been expelled from their homes in 1863.

Sheryl Dowlin, who has 20 years of experience in the field of communication, is currently adjunct faculty in the Boise State Department of Communication.
