Boise State Students Present Speech Showcase Nov. 30

Boise State University communication students will present their semi-annual Speech Showcase at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, in the Student Union Jordan Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

Emceed by professor Marty Most, the Speech Showcase is a keen competition between student public speakers who have been nominated by students and instructors of Communication 101 classes. Each of the eight finalists from preliminary rounds of judging, representative of about 1,000 students taking Communication 101, will present an eight-minute speech to compete for more than $1,500 in scholarship money, as decided by a panel of distinguished judges.

Rob Perez, a senior vice-president for U.S. Bank and major underwriter for the event, will judge the event along with Dina Jewell, author and KIDO Radio personality. Bruce Gordon, recently retired attorney for Albertson’s Corp., Mary Frances Casper, Boise State professor of public relations, and Susan Whaley, journalist and political communications director, will round out the judging panel.

During the judges’ deliberations, an exhibition of parliamentary debate will be presented by members of the national champion Talkin’ Broncos forensics team. The department’s goal in sponsoring this event is two-fold: to provide models of and motivate speakers toward speech excellence, and in general to celebrate successful communication in the public sphere.
