This Week at Boise State

The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of Nov. 12-18. Please note that all events are subject to change. For updated information on all events, visit http://events.boisestate.edu.

EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
Nov. 13-16: Poverty Issues Awareness Week. The Boise State Volunteer Services Board is sponsoring several events, including presentations, a film and a hunger banquet, that spotlight poverty issues. All events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Volunteer Services Board at 426-4240.

November: Native American Heritage Month.
The Cultural Center will celebrate with a series of events. All events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Boise State Cultural Center at 426-5950.

EXHIBITIONS:
Through Dec. 2: “Visual Babble: BFA Thesis Exhibition.” Visual Arts Center. This exhibition is the culminating activity for bachelor of fine arts students, and features work in sculpture, photography, painting, graphic design, illustration, ceramics and metals. Call 426-3994.

Through Dec. 1: “Fade to Red Exhibition.” Student Union Gallery. This exhibition captures the gamut of emotions HIV and AIDS conjure both domestically and throughout the world. The works move viewers to action and toward a better understanding of HIV and AIDS. Opening reception from 7-9 p.m. Nov. 17. Call 426-4636.

SUNDAY, NOV. 12
Symphonic Winds. Morrison Center. 4:30 p.m. The University Symphonic Winds will present a concert of “Great Suites for Band” that will include Gustav Holst’s “First Suite in E Flat,” Percy Grainger’s “Lincolnshire Posy” and David Stanhope’s “Australian Fantasia.” Tickets $5 general, $3 seniors, free for students of all ages. MONDAY, NOV. 13
“30 Days to Bad Health.” Student Union Hatch A Ballroom. 7 p.m. This presentation on poverty’s impact on health care will examine living on a minimum wage and its consequences. Followed by a presentation and discussion by Ed Baker, director of the Center for Health Policy at Boise State. Free. Call 426-4240.

“Nonproliferation: Closing the Nuclear Clubhouse.” Student Union Bishop Barnwell Room. 7-9 p.m. This panel discussion focuses on the state of nuclear weapons and the efforts to control them. Free. Call 344-9161.

TUESDAY, NOV. 14
Inquiry Night. Student Union Barnwell Room. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Local teachers will share their innovative teaching methods. English professor and Boise State Writing Project director Jeffery Wilhelm will give a keynote speech. Free. Call 426-1199.

“Support Migrant Farm Workers in Idaho.” Student Union Hatch C and D Ballrooms. 7 p.m. Migrant and seasonal farm workers often do not have access to basic social services. Featuring the Idaho Migrant Council. Free. Call 426-4240.

“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. This performance is a rainbow ride through Biblical Egypt on the wings of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music. Part of the Fred Meyer Broadway Across America-Boise Series. This event also takes place Nov. 15 and 16. Tickets $28.50-$48.50 through Select-a-Seat. Call 426-1609.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 15
REACH Health and Wellness Fair. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Boise State invites the Treasure Valley community to take steps toward a healthier lifestyle at the 10th annual REACH Health and Wellness Fair. Free. Call 426-3656.

Auto Mechanics Workshop for Women. Larry Selland College of Applied Technology. 4 p.m. The Boise State Women’s Center will host this workshop with Barbara Dean, a local mechanic. Participants will get to examine cars closely, getting a better understanding of them, and will have a chance to ask questions. Free. Call 426-4259 to register.

“A Quiet Revolution.” Student Union Jordan A Ballroom. 7 p.m. Join the Volunteer Services Board in watching this short documentary, which features Nobel Prize Winner Wangari Maathai and examines how people in developing nations can creatively make use of their own limited environmental resources. “Mystery of the Maya.” Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 7 p.m. This film explores the mystery behind how the Maya were able to construct vast cities without the use of metal tools, beasts of burden or even the wheel. Free. Call 426-5950.

“Antigone.” Morrison Center Stage II. 7:30 p.m. “Antigone” is Sophocles’ timeless and powerful examination of personal duty to family and faith versus the laws of the state. Directed by Ann Hoste. This event also takes place Nov. 16-18. Tickets $12 general; $10 seniors, non-Boise State students, alumni and military; full-time Boise State students, faculty and staff can pick up a free ticket at the Student Union Info Desk, Taco Bell Arena and the Morrison Center. THURSDAY, NOV. 16
Great American Smokeout. The Quad. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Student Union Building 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Free quit kits available, giveaways, tobacco cessation services and information on the effects of smoking. Free. Call 426-5686.

The “S” Word. Cultural Center Lounge. 5 p.m. This discussion will focus on efforts to remove the “S” word from Idaho landmarks. Free. Call 426-5950.

Hunger Banquet. Student Union Jordan A Ballroom. 6 p.m. This event is an opportunity to learn about unequal distribution of wealth in the world, including the United States. Featuring guest speakers Robin W. Allen and Will Rainford. Free. Call 426-4240.

FRIDAY, NOV. 17
International Connections Luncheon Seminar Series. Student Union Jordan A Ballroom. 12:30-1:30 p.m. Dewey Dykstra, professor of physics at Boise State, will present “Engaging Tibetan Monks in Inquiry into Science.” Dykstra will talk about his travels to northern India to participate in the Science for Monks Project begun by the Dalai Lama. Lenny Schranze. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m. Guest artist Schranze, viola, of the University of Memphis will play an all-Brahms recital with pianist James Cook. Tickets $5 general, $3 seniors and free for students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. Call 426-3980.

SATURDAY, NOV. 18
“Fantastic Voyage.” Morrison Center. 10 a.m. and 8:15 p.m. Ron Spigelman will conduct this Boise Philharmonic program of Mozart, Wagner, Corigliano, Copland and Schumann. Tickets for the 10 a.m. dress rehearsal are $11 adults, $6 students and seniors, $30 family. Tickets for the evening performance $24-$49 by calling 344-7849.

Broncoville Tailgate Party. Caven-Williams Sports Complex (next to Bronco Stadium). 10 a.m. Broncoville features food vendors, kids’ games, big screen televisions, music and more. Recruiting Conference. Simplot-Micron Technology Center Room 210. 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The Office of Admissions and College of Engineering are co-hosting a Web conference on “Understanding and Recruiting Latino/a Students.” Free. Call 426-1388.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 22
Flu Shot Clinic. Health and Wellness Center. 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Walk-in patients will be accepted only during the Wednesday clinics. Students may call 426-1459 for an appointment to receive the vaccine at other times. Departments or clubs that wish to receive the vaccine as a group are asked to call Betsy Johnson at 426-2354. $19 for Boise State students, $22 for staff.

SATURDAY, NOV. 25
Armchair Football. Student Union Brava! Stage. Begins 30 minutes before kick-off. Watch the Broncos play Nevada on a big screen and enjoy free food and prizes. Free. Call 426-4636

Riders in the Sky. Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. After years of requests, the entire gang from Tumbleweed Valley is back in the saddle and taking the golden age of radio across the country with a new touring presentation of Riders Radio Theatre.
