Medieval Play 'The Adventures
of Silence' Brings Battles, Dragons and More to Boise State University
Dragon fights, feast music and battles will resound throughout the stacks of
library books during “The Adventures of Silence” at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2
and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 in the McCain Room on the second floor of the Alberstons
Library on the Boise State campus. The events, which is presented by Boise
State’s Medieval Drama Guild, is free and open to the public.
“The Adventures of Silence” brings to life the story of Cador and Eufemie,
brought together by love and their child, Silence, who is born a girl but is
brought up as a boy because of unjust inheritance laws. Silence becomes a famous
minstrel and then a valiant knight, facing perilous challenges in both roles.
The play, which hails from 13th century France, tackles challenging questions of
gender identity and heredity versus environment against a background of medieval
court life. The production draws on medieval ways of thinking about
entertainment and turns away from a formalized stage setting, turning instead to
the library, a medieval center of both ideas and entertainment. Students in the
Medieval Drama class partner with community actors and musicians, including Aage
Neilsen and Jennifer Drake of Darkwood Consort and violist Linda Kline Lamar of
the Boise State Music Department. James Orr, the director and a drama teacher at
Crossroads Middle School, brings extensive experience reshaping medieval
material to make it accessible to modern audiences.
