BSU Talkin' Broncos Rally in Louisiana for 11th Straight Tournament Win

The Boise State debate and speech team rallied on the final day of competition to win the 32nd annual Red River Classic, hosted by Louisiana State University and Louisiana Tech in Shreveport, La., Nov. 10-12. The University of Alabama built a sizable lead in individual speaking events early in the competition, but the Talkin’ Broncos answered with a dominating performance in the championship brackets of the debate competition. Boise State finished with 358 team points to outdistance second-place William Carey University of Mississippi with 200 points, third-place University of Arkansas with 156 points, and a field of 27 other teams from 11 states. The victory extends the Talkin’ Bronco’s winning streak to 11 consecutive tournaments.

Boise State struggled to stay with Alabama, the top forensics team in the Southeast Conference, in the early going. But a handful of top-three finishes in speech competition kept the Talkin’ Broncos close. Barton Jackson (senior, Eagle) won Impromptu Speaking, finished second in Extemporaneous Speaking and was also second in Pentathlon. Katy Jibben (senior, Boise) scored a first in Poetry Interpretation and a third in Speech to Entertain. Sean Watson (junior, Kimberly) added a first in Speech to Entertain, and Ben Bishop (junior, Boise) placed third in Persuasive Speaking.

In debate competition, Boise State pushed four teams to the tournament semifinals and won the open division championship when the team of Regan Charlton (freshman, Inkom) and Jordan Park (sophomore, Idaho Falls) defeated a team from Cameron University (Okla.) on a 3-0 decision in the tournament finals. In novice division, Jibben and Watson also made the final round, finishing second to a team from Abilene Christian University (Texas) on a 2-1 decision. The Boise State teams of Jackson and Chad Judy (junior, Idaho Falls), and Wayne Rysavy (senior, Ramstein, Germany) and Travis Walker (freshman, Idaho Falls) finished tied for third in open division.

Seven Broncos were named to the 12-person All-Tournament Team: Jackson (who was also named the tournament MVP), Jibben, Watson, Judy, Rysavy, Walker, and Charlton.

Colleges and universities from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas competed in the Red River tournament, the final competition of the semester for the Boise State team. The Talkin’ Broncos’ 11-tournament winning streak extends back to February 2005 and includes the 2006 Great West Regional Championship and the 2005 Pi Kappa Delta National Championship. The team is coached by communication professor Marty Most.
