The Boise State team competed in Chicago, Ill., against students from universities in Region III, an area that encompasses 11 states in the West and Midwest. The Academic Olympiad covers a broad range of engineering and related material and includes both written and oral questions.

Team members include Arturo Garcia, a senior majoring in electrical engineering from Emmett; Rafael Flores, a freshman majoring in civil engineering from Caldwell; Gerardo J. Belmont, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering from Caldwell; and team alternate Mayra Landeros, a sophomore majoring in criminal justice from Boise.

Garcia, who was also part of last year’s winning team, said he was nervous about this year’s competition in part because he was the only upperclassman. “Everyone did great,” Garcia said. “Now we’re getting prepared for the national competition.”

In January 2006, Boise State’s SHPE chapter placed second behind Cornell University in the national Academic Olympiad held in Orlando, Fla. Boise State beat out teams from the University of California-Berkeley, Cal Poly Pomona, the University of Florida and a number of others to gain the second-place national slot.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at Boise State promotes the development of minorities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to achieve educational excellence, economic opportunity and social equality. The chapter has received many honors, including the 2005 SHPE National Small Outstanding Chapter of the Year, the 2005 SHPE Regional Outstanding Chapter of the year, and the 2004 Boise State outstanding student organization.
