Kori Bond, an
associate professor of piano at Idaho State University, will perform composer
Dmitri Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues, Opus 87, at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at the
Morrison Center Recital Hall. The event will mark the centennial of
Shostakovich’s birth. Tickets are $5 general, $3 seniors and free to students of
all ages and Boise State faculty and staff at the door.
“These are fascinating pieces,” said James Cook, chair of the Boise State
University Music Department. “They are substantial works, standing next to the
48 preludes and fugues of J.S. Bach. Performances of them are very rare. We are
fortunate that Dr. Bond is bringing this program to Boise.”
In 1950, Shostakovich — who also was a pianist — was invited to Liepzig as a
representative to judge a piano competition to honor the bicentennial of the
death of Bach. There he heard a performance of the composer’s preludes and
fugues by pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva, who won the competition. Shostakovich was
inspired to write his own set of 24 preludes and fugues in all the major and
minor keys in homage to Bach, and dedicated the set to Nikolayeva.
Not since Nikolayeva’s death in 1993 has a complete performance of both books of
the preludes and fugues been heard — until Bond’s recent performances on
successive nights in Pocatello in Salt Lake City. She will play 12 of the 24
preludes and fugues from both books during her performance at Boise State.
“Shostakovich used the classical fugal techniques of Bach, which connoisseurs of
Bach’s fugues will recognize,” Bond said. “The pieces were written in a
surprisingly accessible style in order to get past the censors at the Soviet
government’s composition committee.”
