Boise State University will celebrate the legacy of civil rights leader Martin
Luther King Jr. during the annual MLK/Human Rights Celebration, Jan. 15-20. The
celebration, which has a theme this year of “And Justice for $um” will feature a
march and rally, a poetry slam, a service event and a special address by the
Rev. Jesse Jackson.
Following is a schedule of events, all of which are free and open to the public.
• MLK Human Rights Exhibition. January 10 - February 23. “Our Complex
Past: A Look at Human Rights in Idaho” reflects upon Idaho’s history of human
rights from the early 1800s through today. Located in the SUB art gallery,
second floor.
• March and rally. 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Jan. 15. Student Union Jordan
Ballroom and the Idaho Statehouse. Take a part in America’s civil rights
heritage by participating in this rally, which travels from Boise State to the
Statehouse.
Activities begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Jordan Ballroom with poster making, live
choir performances and other preparations for the march. From the Jordan,
participants will march to the rally at noon. Guest speakers at the Statehouse
include newly-elected state Rep. Sue Chew, Rabbi Dan Fink, Associated Students
of Boise State University president Wyatt Parke, Boise State MLK chairman Rodney
Curley, and more. There will also be a live performance by the rapper Kritik.
• Rev. Jesse Jackson keynote address. 7:30 p.m. Jan. 17. Taco Bell
Arena. Jesse Jackson is one of the United States’ foremost civil rights,
religious and political figures. During the past 40 years he has played a
pivotal role in countless movements. His speech is titled “With Justice for All:
Human Rights and Civil Rights at Home and Abroad.”
Admission is free and tickets are not required for the general public. A limited
number of priority seating tickets are available for students with valid ID;
those tickets can be picked up at the Student Union Info Desk and the seats are
guaranteed until 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Lecture attendees should anticipate
security checks and are discouraged from bringing large purses, bags or
backpacks. Free parking will be available in the west stadium lot.
• Poetry Slam for Justice III workshop with Def Jam poet Shihan. 1-3 p.m.
Jan. 18. Student Union Jordan Ballroom A. Poets who are looking to perfect the
art of performance or anyone interested in slam poetry is invited to a special
workshop lead by spoken word artist Shihan.
• Poetry Slam for Justice III featuring Shihan. 6:30-9 p.m. Jan. 18
Student Union Jordan Ballroom D. Featuring Def Jam poet Shihan, local hip-hop
artist Kritik and the Balcony Club’s resident DJ, Savage. Registration begins at
6 p.m. and will be limited to the first 10 poets.
• MLK Service Saturday. 9 a.m. Jan. 20. First-floor dining area of the
Student Union Building. Honor Martin Luther King Jr. by donating time to local
charitable and non-profit agencies. Participants will be able to choose from
several activities, and free continental breakfast will be provided. Call
