Boise State Sets One-month Record in Sales for Bronco Merchandise in Just Two Weeks

In just two weeks, the Boise State University Bookstore has sold $465,000 in total net sales of Bronco insignia merchandise, already smashing the previous monthly record set in December 2004 in half the time.

“It is great news for the students of Boise State, who will benefit from the availability of additional scholarship dollars in future years,” said Kim Thomas, Bookstore director. She explains that unlike other retailers, the Boise State Bookstore and Bronco Shop, which are owned and operated by Boise State, return 100 percent of their profits to the university.

Thanks to the nationally ranked Boise State football team’s 12-0 regular season, fifth consecutive Western Athletic Conference championship, and berth in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma on New Year’s Day, sales of Bronco clothing and other merchandise have skyrocketed.

“Our biggest sales month in Bronco insignia merchandise was December 2004 — when the football team went unbeaten and went to the Liberty Bowl — in which we did $359,000 in sales,” said Thomas. “This month to date through Sunday, Dec. 17, we’ve sold $465,000. Of that, $223,000 was WAC championship or Fiesta Bowl product.”

To put the Bookstore’s record sales in perspective, Thomas noted that merchandise sales during the first 17 days of December surpassed annual sales in years prior to 2001. “In my first year at the Bookstore — fiscal year 1998 — total annual sales volume for insignia merchandise was $334,000,” said Thomas. “If I take it back 10 years — FY ’97 — total annual sales volume for insignia merchandise was $222,000.”

Since Dec. 3, the Bookstore has shipped nearly 2,000 online orders, totaling $108,000. “We have shipped Web orders to every state in the U.S.,” Thomas said. “States with the highest sales volume are Idaho, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Texas.”

On Dec. 8, which included a two-hour discount sale of Fiesta Bowl merchandise and other Bronco gear for employees, the Boise State Bookstore had total net sales of approximately $76,000, not including online sales. “Of that, we sold approximately $43,000 during the faculty/staff appreciation time frame, said Thomas. “Total net clothing sales at all locations on Dec. 8 were almost $73,000 — the biggest clothing sales day ever!”

According to Thomas, the Bookstore’s record month, which still has two weeks remaining, started with $13,000 in sales in one hour after the announcement on Dec. 3 that the Broncos had earned a berth in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl against the Sooners.
