FIESTA
FEVER: In anticipation of the upcoming Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Boise State
University’s Office of Communications has identified story ideas that would be
of interest to the community. Following is one of these stories. Feel free to
use as written, or contact the sources listed at the bottom for more
information.
Korey Hall Brings Skills in
Football, Construction Management, to New BSU Indoor Training Facility
For Bronco linebacker Korey Hall, the new Caven-Williams Sports Complex at Boise
State University is more than just a place to run drills in preparation for the
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1 against the Oklahoma Sooners.
Hall, the Western Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year, actually
helped build the $9.5 million indoor athletic training facility that opened last
February. He did so as part of an internship with McAlvain Construction of
Boise.
“It was neat to be able to be a part of something like that,” said Hall, who
graduated earlier this month with a bachelor’s degree in construction
management. “All my teammates kept asking me how it was going. It’s unusual to
get work experience on a project that is so personal.”
Hall completed a variety of tasks as part of the internship, from reading
blueprints to helping set up the job site office to quality control monitoring.
The 78,000-square-foot complex includes a full-size football field, offices and
storage area, and is considered one of the most impressive buildings of its kind
in the country.
Building the new indoor training facility was a complex and technical
undertaking, as Hall and others working on the project can attest. According to
Hall’s supervisor — who just happens to be a former Bronco standout himself —
Hall did a great job.
“Korey was very dedicated and very willing to learn. He was interested in every
aspect and every phase of the project. He’s just a great kid,” said Mike Wilson,
job site superintendent for McAlvain Construction, and a Bronco wide receiver
from 1989-1993.
Hall, who is from Glenns Ferry, Idaho, said he was always interested in building
things. After being offered a scholarship and a chance to play football, he
decided to enroll at Boise State.
The decision turned out to be a good one. Not only has Hall received accolades
from his construction management professors for his solid academic performance,
but he has excelled on the football field as well. A four-year starter and
defensive captain for the Broncos, Hall has earned many honors. In addition to
being named the WAC Defensive Player of the Year, he was named a second-team
All-American by the Sporting News, earned first-team All-WAC honors, and was
named the Broncos’ most outstanding defensive player.
“Korey is outstanding both on and off the football field,” said Casey Cline, a
Boise State construction management professor and an avid Broncos fan. “He’s
going to go far.”
