Boise State University's
Ahsahta Press Announces Sixth Sawtooth Poetry Prize Competition
A $1,500 prize and publication by Boise State University’s Ahsahta Press await
the winner of the sixth Sawtooth Poetry Prize competition, which will be judged
this year by poet Peter Gizzi. The competition will continue until March 1.
Poets are invited to submit unpublished manuscripts of poetry for the award.
Complete submission details can be found at the Ahsahta Press Web site,
http://ahsahtapress.boisestate.edu.
The winner of last year’s competition, “In No One’s Land” by Paige Ackerson-Kiely,
will be published by Ahsahta Press on Jan. 15, according to Janet Holmes, the
director of the press.
“Poetry competitions have become popular as a way to discover new, unfamiliar
writers who have put together full-length manuscripts,” Holmes said. “They are
also a way to bring fresh voices into a publisher’s list.”
Gizzi, this year’s judge, is the author of three books of poetry as well as
editor of Jack Spicer’s collected lectures, “The House That Jack Built.” A
professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, he has received the Lavan
Younger Poets Award from the Academy of American Poets and a Guggenheim
fellowship, among many other honors.
Ahsahta Press, an all-poetry imprint at Boise State, has been publishing since
1974. The name “ahsahta” comes from the Mandan word for a Rocky Mountain bighorn
sheep, and was first recorded during the Lewis and Clark expedition.
