The public is
invited to view bald eagles and other wildlife along the Boise River, watch
award-winning wildlife films from around the world and attend a gala auction and
dinner as part of the eighth annual Bald Eagle Days Jan. 25-27.
The annual event is presented by Boise State University’s Idaho Bird Observatory
in cooperation with a number of other public and private organizations. The main
purpose of Bald Eagle Days is to raise local awareness, appreciation and support
for the Boise River and its wildlife.
Here is a rundown of activities:
Bald Eagle Day: The signature event of the annual festivities is 10 a.m.-
4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, 5657 Warm
Springs Ave. The Idaho Shakespeare Festival is located on the Boise River within
Barber Pool, a natural area that is home to bald eagles and a variety of other
birds and wildlife.
This free, family-oriented event includes a variety of activities designed to
allow the public to get “up close and personal” with America’s national symbol.
Participants can take part in wildlife viewing along the Boise River with
Audubon Society volunteers, listen to informative presentations featuring live
bald eagles and other birds of prey, and participate in hands-on educational
raptor displays.
International Wildlife Film Festival: For the third straight year, Bald
Eagle Days will feature the post-festival tour of the International Wildlife
Film Festival at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 25-26 and at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Jan. 27 at
The Flicks, 646 Fulton Street. Tickets are $6 at the door.
Four unique shows will feature 19 of the festival’s top award-winning films,
appropriate for the entire family. “Life in the Undergrowth,” a film that
highlights the amazing hidden world of insects and their allies, narrated by Sir
David Attenborough, “Norfolk Broads,” a film about restoration of England’s
great swamp, and “Caribou and Wolves: The Endless Dance,” a film showcasing the
intimate life-and-death relationship between two highly adapted species, are
among the award-winning entries to be screened.

Gala dinner and auction: 6:30-9:30 p.m. Jan. 26, The Rose Room, 714 W.
Idaho Street. Tickets are $25. Call 426-2700 by Jan. 20 to R.S.V.P. The gala
will feature a wildlife art auction and dinner, and conceptual plans for an
outdoor education and interpretive program at Barber Pool will be unveiled.
Proceeds will support conservation efforts by the Idaho Bird Observatory at the
Barber Pool site.
Bald Eagle Days is presented by Boise State’s Idaho Bird Observatory in
cooperation with Idaho Department of Fish and Game, Idaho Shakespeare Festival,
and Golden Eagle Audubon Society. Other organizations involved include the Idaho
Foundation for Parks and Lands, Idaho Parks and Recreation, Idaho Environmental
Education Association, and the MK Nature Center.
The Idaho Bird Observatory is a Boise State University program founded in 1993
by Greg Kaltenecker, who earned a master’s degree in raptor biology at Boise
State, and Marc Bechard, a Boise State biology professor, after it was
discovered that the Boise Ridge is a major bird migration flyway. The ridge
above the city of Boise supports one of the largest known concentrations of
migrating raptors and migrating neo-tropical songbirds in the West, according to
Kaltenecker, IBO director. The IBO is funded through donations to the Boise
State University Foundation and other grants and provides many educational,
research and volunteer opportunities.
