More Fiesta Bowl Championship
Merchandise Expected at Bookstore; Monthly Sale Record Set
Boise State football fans are buying Fiesta Bowl championship gear faster than
the university’s Bookstore can stock the merchandise. But a new shipment of
T-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, hats, glassware, key chains, lapel pins and
other merchandise touting the Broncos’ bowl victory is expected today.
“The minute anything arrives that says anything about our win in the Fiesta
Bowl, it’s gone,” said Kim Thomas, director of the Boise State Bookstore. “We
can’t keep the stuff on our shelves.” However, Thomas said the Bookstore and
Bronco Shop are expecting a new shipment of merchandise today.
One item that won’t be available right away is the locker room Fiesta Bowl
championship hats, which sold out soon after they arrived at the Bookstore and
Bronco Shop in the university’s Student Union. “Nike [the manufacturer] is
custom printing a new order of the hats for us,” Thomas said, “but they aren’t
due to arrive until early February. However, customers can pre-order the locker
room hats on our Web site, and we will ship them as soon as they arrive.”
The same goes for two DVDs the Bookstore will sell once they arrive in February.
One DVD features the Fox network’s coverage of the Broncos’ Fiesta Bowl victory
and the other, produced by the Boise State Athletic Department, contains
highlights of the entire 2006 season. Both can be pre-ordered online through the
Bookstore Web site. Online pre-orders can be made by going online to Boise
State’s main Web page at www.boisestate.edu
or the Bronco athletics page at
www.broncosports.com. From there, click on the Bookstore menu button.
In addition, iPods with the Bronco logo are on sale at BroncoTEC, the computer
store in the Student Union.
Even before the frenzy following Boise State’s Fiesta Bowl win, Bookstore sales
of Bronco insignia merchandise had gone through the roof. According to Thomas,
sales reached $752,000 last month alone. Of that total, $342,000 was for Western
Athletic Conference championship and Fiesta Bowl merchandise. To put those
figures in perspective, total annual sales 10 years ago were $222,000. “This has
been by far the biggest insignia merchandise sales month in BSU history,” said
Thomas.
The Bookstore and Bronco Shop are the only retail outlets where the proceeds go
directly back to the university for scholarships and other expenses. “We are
very excited about the impact the success of the football team has had in
benefiting the entire university,” said Thomas, “especially in regard to how it
helps provide scholarships for our students.”
