Treasure Valley families can make a memory “wafer,” operate a lunar rover robot, experience a wind tunnel, construct an “edible aquifer” out of layers of sweets and participate in a variety of other hands-on engineering and science activities at Discover Engineering Days Feb. 2-3 at Boise State University.

Discover Engineering Days is presented by the College of Engineering at Boise State with the support of the Idaho National Laboratory and a number of other government and business sponsors. For the first time this year, the free event has been expanded to three separate locations on campus in order to provide more opportunities for participants. In addition, an online pre-registration system has been set up and will be required for several of the most popular activities.

“This is a great family opportunity for people of all ages to have fun together while also learning about some of the creative and important work that engineers do,” said Cheryl Schrader, dean of the College of Engineering at Boise State. “We encourage everyone to join us Feb. 2 and 3 for this free event.”

Discover Engineering Days kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in Room 110 of the Engineering and Technology Building with opening ceremonies and presentations by Caleb Chung, inventor of the mega-selling mechanical toy Furby and the new robotic dinosaur Pleo, and by Tony Leavitt, NASA aerospace education specialist. Hands-on activities, including experiencing a wind tunnel, will continue until 8 p.m. in the Harry Morrison Laboratory.

On Saturday, Feb. 3, more than two dozen activities will be offered from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at various locations on the Boise State campus. Boise State engineering faculty and students, along with volunteers from government agencies, public schools and local corporations, will run the activities. Here is just a sampling of what’s being offered:
• Develop a computer language using jelly beans
• Watch a bomb squad robot
• Learn about artificial intelligence with tic-tac-toe
• Build a rocket racer and learn about Newton’s Third Law of Motion
• View the College of Engineering’s wind tunnel
• Learn about hydro, wind, solar and other alternative energy sources
• Join in science activities geared for preschoolers
• Use computer simulations to design a bridge
• Use liquid nitrogen to make ice cream
• Ride a Segway

Most of these activities are open to everyone and don’t require pre-registration. For a complete schedule of activities, including maps, and to pre-register for some of the activities, go to http://jasonidaho.boisestate.edu.  For more information, contact Cheryl Burgess at 334-1058 or Leandra Aburusa-Lete at 426-4432.

Sponsors for Family Engineering Day include: Boise State University, Idaho National Laboratory, Boise Independent School District, Boise Police Department, Crucial Technology, Discovery Center of Idaho, Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, Idaho Office of Science and Technology, Idaho Power, Micron Technology Inc., NASA, United Water, University of Idaho and Washington Group International.

Discover Engineering Days at Boise State is being presented as of National Engineering Month, a program that promotes engineering as a profession and celebrates the creative contributions engineers make to improve the quality of life worldwide.

The event is also part of the College of Engineering’s yearlong celebration, “Engineering 10.0,” to mark its 10th anniversary. A number of other activities are planned during February by the College of Engineering, including a free presentation by the hosts of the Discovery Channel’s “MythBusters” at 2 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Taco Bell Arena.
