This Week at Boise State

The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of Jan. 14-20. Please note that all events are subject to change. For updated information on all events, visit http://events.boisestate.edu.

EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
Jan. 15-20: Martin Luther King Jr./Human Rights Celebration. This annual event at Boise State, which has a theme this year of “And Justice for $um,” includes marches, rallies, lectures, a poetry slam and a Jan. 17 keynote address by Rev. Jesse Jackson. EXHIBITIONS:
Through Feb. 26: Human Rights Exhibition. Student Union Gallery. 7:30 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. “Our Complex Past: A Look at Human Rights in Idaho.” Reflect upon Idaho’s history of human rights from the early 1800s through the present. Free. Call 426-4636.

MONDAY, JAN. 15
MLK/Human Rights Celebration March and Rally. Student Union Jordan Ballroom and the Idaho Statehouse. 9:30 a.m.-noon. Take part in America’s civil rights heritage by participating in this rally, which travels from Boise State to the Statehouse. Free. 426-1242.

TUESDAY, JAN. 16

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 17
Jesse Jackson. Taco Bell Arena. 7:30 p.m. Human rights leader and political activist Rev. Jesse Jackson will speak as part of Boise State University’s Martin Luther King Jr./Human Rights Celebration. Jackson’s lecture is titled “With Justice for All: Human Rights and Civil Rights a Reality.” Doors open at 6 p.m. Student priority seating tickets are available at the Student Union Information Desk. The Chieftains. Morrison Center. 8 p.m. Six-time Grammy winners The Chieftains will perform their unique blend of Irish music. THURSDAY. JAN. 18
International Connections Luncheon Seminar Series. Student Union Lookout Room. 12:30-1:30 p.m. Cindy Salo, U.S. Geological Survey Research Ecologist, will present “Nurturing the Mother Continent: Natural Resources in Senegal.” Sponsored by Albertsons Library and International Programs at Boise State University. Poetry Workshop and Poetry Slam. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. Workshop 1-3 p.m.; Slam 6:30-9 p.m. In conjunction with Martin Luther King Jr./Human Rights Celebration, Student Activities and the Associated Students of Boise State University present a poetry workshop and poetry slam with featured guest SHIHAN and special guest Kritik. Some content may not be suitable for children. Free. Call 426-4636.

SATURDAY, JAN. 20
Service Saturday. Student Union first floor dining area. 9 a.m. Honor Martin Luther King Jr. by donating time to local charitable and non-profit agencies. SUNDAY, JAN. 21
American Piano Duo. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 4 p.m. The American Piano Duo, comprised of Del Parkinson and Jeffrey Shumway, will perform a program featuring Ravel’s “Bolero,” Copland’s “Hoe-Down,” and Dukas’ “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” The concert also will feature a waltz, and Spanish and Russian dances. $5 general, $3 seniors, free to students of all ages and Boise State faculty and staff. MONDAY, JAN. 22
Frank Church Conference on Public Affairs. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. This year’s conference focuses on global warming. The day sessions are free and open to the public. For more information, call 426-2941.

Al Gore. Taco Bell Arena. 7 p.m. Former Vice President Gore will give the keynote address for the Frank Church Institute conference on global warming. Tickets are available through Select-a-Seat.

Student Organization Fair. Student Union Building first floor. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Fairs will also take place Jan. 24-25. Boise State is home to more than 200 student organizations. Each fair will host about 20 different organizations. During the fairs, students can learn about the rewards of campus involvement. Free. Call 426-2540.

Diverse Perspectives Series. Student Union Jordan C Ballroom. 5:30-7 p.m. “Beyond Beats and Rhymes: A Hip-Hop Head Weighs in on Manhood in Hip-hop Culture” takes an in-depth look at machismo in rap music and hip-hop culture, where creative genius, poetic beauty and mad beats collide with misogyny, violence and homophobia. This film also looks at how the urgent political message of hip-hop transformed into the gangster rap that dominates urban radio today. Free. WEDNESDAY, JAN. 24
Four Rivers Permit Lottery Information Session. Student Recreation Center Classroom. 7 p.m. The Main Salmon, Middle Fork of the Salmon, Selway and Snake-Hells Canyon rivers, located in central Idaho and eastern Oregon, offer a broad range of floating and recreation opportunities. This session will help participants through the application process, answer questions on historic flows, launch dates and equipment requirements. Free. Call 426-2628.

THURSDAY, JAN. 25
“Bald Eagle Days.” The public is invited to view bald eagles and other wildlife along the Boise River, watch award-winning wildlife films from around the world and attend a gala auction and dinner as part of the eighth annual Bald Eagle Days Jan. 25-27. Idaho Standardized Achievement Test Workshop. Student Union Lookout Room. 3:30-5:30 p.m. This workshop will provide much-needed information about what the new ISAT means for students, teachers and parents. Free. Call 426-4437.

“Pure Passion.” Student Union Special Events Center. 8 p.m. Idaho Dance Theatre presents a powerful, athletic, theatrical and contemporary dance performance. Completely original choreography by Idaho’s most experienced and accomplished dance artists. This event also takes place Jan. 26-27 and at 2 p.m. Jan. 28. Tickets $22.50 through Select-a-Seat. SATURDAY, JAN. 27
Lunar New Year Festival. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 6:30 p.m. Celebrate the year of the pig at the Lunar New Year Festival 2007. Presented by the Boise State University Vietnamese Student Association. Admission is $10 general and $5 for students with ID. Admission is free for children younger than 6.
