The Diverse Perspectives Series at Boise State University will continue with “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in the Student Union Barnwell Room and 10 a.m. Jan. 27 in Room 102E of BSU West. A special performance by hip hop artist Kritik and an audience discussion will follow the Jan. 23 screening.

“Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” examines the representations of gender roles in hip hop and rap music through the lens of filmmaker Byron Hurt, a former college quarterback and activist. Conceived as a “loving critique” from a self-proclaimed fan, Hurt tackles issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today’s hip hop culture.

The Diverse Perspectives Series is a partnership of the Independent Television Service, Idaho Public Television, Boise State University Division of Student Affairs, Student Activities, the Women’s Center and the Cultural Center.
