foundation of knowledge and judgment skills required for winter backcountry
travel and skiing. Emphasis will be placed on assessing snow pack stability,
route selection, group leadership, hazard assessment, rescue and evacuation
procedures. The Feb. 1 class will be at the REC classroom and the Feb. 3 session
will be at a backcountry site; exact location will vary due to snow locations.
• Wilderness First Aid: Feb. 17-19. Registration deadline is Feb. 9.

participants in the internationally recognized Wilderness First Aid curriculum.
Whether you’re a professional guide, parent, hunter or weekend warrior, the
information presented in this seminar could prove invaluable if either you or
someone you are with is injured in the outdoors. This special three-day program
is open to the community.
• River Safety and Rescue: May 17-20. Registration deadline is May 11.

line rescue, victim stabilization and recovery and strong swimmer rescues. This
fast-paced, hands-on seminar will be taught primarily on the water. The class
will camp together May 19 at the river site; participants are encouraged to
bring their Dutch ovens. Personal safety and thermal gear must be provided by
participants. Equipment rentals are available for this class at 50 percent off
the normal rates.
• Four Rivers Permit Lottery Information Session: 7-8 p.m. Jan. 24. Free.
REC Classroom. The Selway, Hells Canyon, Main and Middle Fork of the Salmon
River offer a broad range of floating and recreation opportunities. These
exciting rivers provide scenery, steep canyons, wildlife and whitewater thrills
for thousands of river runners during each summer floating season.
Non-commercial permits to float these four rivers are allocated through a
computerized lottery system. Private floaters may apply for launch reservations
for the four rivers in one application form. This session will guide
participants through the application process, answer questions on historic
flows, launch dates and equipment requirements. Lottery applications will be
available for participants to complete and send to the Forest Service.
