This Week at Boise State
The following are upcoming events at Boise State University for the week of Feb.

EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
February: Black History Month. Celebrate the history and accomplishments
of African-Americans during Black History Month at Boise State. Events include
panel discussions, films, presentations and more. For more information, contact
the Boise State Cultural Center at 426-5950 or 426-1449.
EXHIBITIONS:
Through Feb. 20: “Here: Considerations of Place in Contemporary Photography.”
Gallery 1, Liberal Arts Building, and Gallery 2, Hemingway Center. 10 a.m.-5
p.m. Monday through Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturday; closed Sundays and university
holidays. Featuring the work of Alex Emmons, Thomas Lewis, Danielle Mericle, TJ

Through Feb. 23: MLK Human Rights Art Exhibit, “Our Complex Past.”
Student Union Gallery. 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. “Our Complex Past” reflects upon
Idaho’s history of human rights from the early 1800s through today. This
exhibition is presented by Boise State University Student Activities. Free. Call

SUNDAY, FEB. 4
African-American Read-In. Idaho Black History Museum, 508 Julia Davis
Drive. 2-4 p.m. This year’s book, “The Blacker the Berry,” by Wallace Thurman,
was published in 1929 during the Harlem Renaissance and features the city of
Boise. The event is supported by the Boise State University Department of
English and The Cabin. Free. Call 433-0017.
MONDAY, FEB. 5
White Privilege Series. Cultural Center. 1 p.m. The Diversity Round Table
Discussion presents a series exploring white privilege. Wanda Viento will talk
about how to be an ally. Free. Call 426-4317.
TUESDAY, FEB. 6
Dan Purser. Student Union Brava! Stage. 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The Boise State
University Student Programs Board presents singer/songwriter Dan Purser as the
final artist in the “Concert Trifecta,” which featured three musical artists for
three consecutive Tuesdays. Free. Call 426-1391.
WEDNESDAY, FEB. 7
Blood Drive. Student Union Hatch Ballroom. 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Make an

Remember to bring a photo ID, to drink lots of water 48 hours in advance and to
eat a high-protein meal before donating blood. Refreshments will be provided.

p.m. Discussion of “Persuasion” by Jane Austen. No reservations required. Free.

The Parenting Challenge. Boise State Children’s Center. This educational
program facilitated by Drug Free Idaho focuses on substance abuse, balancing
work and family, child development, family relationships and more. This event
will take place for students on Wednesdays from 3:45-4:45 p.m. through March 14
and for employees Thursdays from 5:15-6:15 p.m. through March 15. Childcare

Nursing Department Informational Session. Science/Nursing Building Room
163. 6 p.m. Current Boise State students interested in applying to the
university’s nursing program are invited to attend an informational session. The
deadline for applying to the nursing program for the 2007-08 academic year is

Poetry Slam. Student Union Lookout Room. 7 p.m. Join Andrea Gibson and
Katie Wirsing in a poetry slam. Don’t forget to sign-up for the “Head-to-Head
Haiku Battle” and the “Absolute Haiku Ruler Supreme.” Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

THURSDAY, FEB. 8
Know Your Status. Student Union Building (check kiosk for location). 11
a.m.-1 p.m. Find out your HIV status with free rapid testing. Test is painless
and completely confidential. Testing will be available the second Thursday of
every month through May. Call 367-6079 for an appointment.
Dodgeball Tournament. Student Recreation Center. 6 p.m. Back by popular
demand and for one night only, students can compete in the dodgeball tournament.

Vocal Jazz Festival. Concert: Feb. 8. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 7:30
p.m. $5 general, $3 seniors, free to students of all ages and Boise State

a.m.-5 p.m. Featured guest artists include Kristin Korb and the Kristin Trio,

Up All Night. Student Recreation Center. 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Gather all your
friends for some late night fun and activities. Come out and work off some of

SATURDAY, FEB. 10
Service Saturday. Boise State West Campus second-floor lobby. 9:30 a.m.
Boise State students, staff, faculty and community members have the opportunity
to volunteer for several hours at local charitable or non-profit agencies. If
you plan on volunteering, contact Volunteer Services Board by Feb. 2.

“Road to Wrestlemania 23 Tour.” Taco Bell Arena. 7:30 p.m. World
Wrestling Entertainment will feature John Cena, Jeff Hardy and Randy Orton, as
well as local hero Torrie Wilson and Chairman Vince McMahon. WWE has been
involved in the sports entertainment business for more than 20 years. Tickets

“American Blackout.” Student Union Farnsworth Room. 7 p.m. This film
critically examines the contemporary tactics used to control our democratic

Comedian Roy Wood Jr. Student Union Hatch Ballroom. 7 p.m. Boise State
Student Programs Board presents comedian Roy Wood Jr., who has been featured on
“The Late Show with David Letterman” and Comedy Central. Free. Call 426-1728.

TUESDAY, FEB. 13
Black History Month: Panel discussion. Student Union Hatch Ballroom. 7
p.m. This panel discussion examines the impact of the ‘N’ word. Free. Call

Machine Tool Technology Program Open House. Larry G. Selland College of
Applied Technology. 4-8 p.m. The open house will give junior high and high
school students an up-close look at the program, as well as give technical
centers and local industry a look at the new HAAS machining equipment. Free.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 14
Concerto Aria. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7 p.m. Vocal, instrumental
and keyboard students vie for the honor of competing in the Concerto-Aria

THURSDAY, FEB. 15
International Connections. Student Union Lookout Room. 12:30-1:30 p.m.
English professor Tom Trusky will present “Ignored in France, Caught in Canada
OR Smuggling in England, Blushing in Italian.” Trusky will detail his efforts to
present the work of Idahoans Nell Shipman and James Castle abroad. Part of the
International Connections Luncheon Seminar Series. Presented by Albertsons

“Borat.” Student Union Special Events Center. 7 and 9 p.m. Boise State
Student Programs Board will show the film “Borat,” a controversial comedy that
follows Kazakh character Borat Sagdiyev around America. SPB will show the film
again Feb. 16 at 7 and 9 p.m. This film is rated “R.” Free for Boise State

FRIDAY, FEB. 16
George Lopez. Morrison Center. 8 p.m. George Lopez is one of the premier
comedic talents in the entertainment industry today. He is the co-creator,
writer, producer and star of the television sitcom, “George Lopez.” Tickets
$39.50-$45.50 available through Select-a-Seat.
Czech Nonet. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 8 p.m. Founded in 1924, the
Czech Nonet is one of the oldest continuously performing string ensembles of its
type in the world. Appearing Feb. 16 as part of the Boise Chamber Music Series
and Feb. 17 as part of the Classic Performance Series. $25 general, $20 seniors

SATURDAY, FEB. 17
Czech Nonet: “A Little Morning Music.” Morrison Center rooms C125 (winds)
and C200 (strings). 10:30 a.m. These chamber music classes are free. The Czech
Nonet, one of the oldest continuously performing string ensembles of its type,
will appear in the Student Union Special Events Center at 8 p.m. Part of the
Classic Performances Series. $10 general, $5 Boise State students, faculty,
staff, non-Boise State students younger than 17 and seniors 55 and older. Call

Boise Philharmonic. Morrison Center. 10 a.m. and 8:15 p.m. This
Philharmonic concert, conducted by Andre Raphel Smith, features music by Adams,
Mendelssohn and Brahms. Prelecture at 7 p.m. Tickets available through the Boise
