Northern Irish Historian Paul Arthur to Give Free Lecture in
Boise
Northern Irish historian Paul Arthur will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at
the Idaho State Historical Museum in Boise. The lecture is free and open to the
public.
The topic of Arthur’s lecture is “The Role of Memory in the Northern Irish
Conflict.” His remarks comes at a particularly appropriate time, as the March 7
elections aimed at restoring shared government in Northern Ireland approach.
Arthur was born and raised in the Bogside area of London/Derry, Northern
Ireland, where Bloody Sunday occurred in 1972. He was active in the Northern
Irish Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and taught in the Maze prison, where
members of various paramilitary groups were incarcerated. He has worked with the
Northern Ireland Community Relations Council and the Cultural Traditions Group,
directs the graduate program in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of
Ulster, and was a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Peace in Washington D.C.
Presently, Arthur is spending the semester as a Fulbright Scholar at Stanford
University. His publications include weekly op-ed pieces for the Irish Times,
“Government and Politics of Northern Ireland” (1980) and “Special Relationships:
Britain, Ireland and the Northern Ireland Problem” (2001).
Arthur’s free lecture is sponsored by the Idaho Historical Museum, the Idaho
Public Archives and Research Library, the departments of History and Sociology
at Boise State University, the Boise State Honors Program, and the Western
Institute for Irish Studies.
