EVENTS OF SPECIAL NOTE:
February: Black History Month. Celebrate the history and accomplishments of African-Americans during Black History Month at Boise State. Events include discussions, a film and more. EXHIBITIONS:

Through Feb. 20: “Here: Considerations of Place in Contemporary Photography.” Gallery 1, Liberal Arts Building, and Gallery 2, Hemingway Center. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon-4 p.m. Saturday; closed Sundays and university holidays. Through Feb. 23: MLK Human Rights Art Exhibit, “Our Complex Past.” Student Union Gallery. 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. “Our Complex Past” reflects upon Idaho’s history of human rights from the early 1800s through today. This exhibition is presented by Boise State University Student Activities. Free. Call 426-4636.

MONDAY, FEB. 12
“American Blackout.” Student Union Farnsworth Room. 6-9 p.m. This film critically examines the contemporary tactics used to control our democratic process and silence the voices of political dissent. Free. Call 426-5950.

Comedian Roy Wood Jr. Student Union Hatch Ballroom. 7 p.m. Boise State Student Programs Board presents comedian Roy Wood Jr., who has been featured on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and Comedy Central. Free. Call 426-1728.

Youth Issues Awareness Week discussion. Student Union Jordan A Ballroom. 7 p.m. Speakers Sue Huizinga, Donnie Hale and Dr. Gail Shuck present the discussion “School is becoming more of a challenge: What should I do?” Free. Call 426-4240.

TUESDAY, FEB. 13

Machine Tool Technology Program Open House. Larry G. Selland College of Applied Technology. 4-8 p.m. The open house will give junior high and high school students an up-close look at the program, as well as give technical centers and local industry a look at the new HAAS machining equipment. Career Expo. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 4-7 p.m. The Larry Selland College will host its annual Career Expo that features dozens of information booths, interactive displays, student projects and more. The event is designed for anyone considering attending college this fall. Drawings will be held for free Bronco gear and other prizes. Free. Call 426-1431.

Youth Issues Awareness Week discussion. Student Union Hatch AB Ballroom. 7 p.m. Presenters Jim Carberry and Melissa Brandy will lead the discussion entitled “Why Aren’t the Kids Outside?” Free. Call 426-4240.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 14
Women in Careers. Women’s Center. Noon-1 p.m. State Rep. Nichole LeFavour will speak. This brown-bag luncheon program features local women serving in non-traditional careers. Free. Call 426-4259.

“Prevent Cervical Cancer.” Student Union Jordan A Ballroom. 6 p.m. Speakers Dr. Elizabeth Hannah and Dr. Kevin Rich will discuss how to prevent cervical cancer. Sponsored by Volunteer Services Board. Free. Call 426-4240.

Concerto Aria. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 7 p.m. Vocal, instrumental and keyboard students vie for the honor of competing in the Concerto-Aria Concert in May. Cost TBA. For more information, call 426-1596.

THURSDAY, FEB. 15
Jim Basnight. Table Rock Café. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Singer/songwriter Jim Basnight will perform during lunch. Free. Call 426-1223.

International Connections. Student Union Lookout Room. 12:30-1:30 p.m. English professor Tom Trusky will present “Ignored in France, Caught in Canada OR Smuggling in England, Blushing in Italian.” Trusky will detail his efforts to present the work of Idahoans Nell Shipman and James Castle abroad. Part of the International Connections Luncheon Seminar Series. Presented by Albertsons Library and International Programs. Free. Call 426-3652.

“Borat.” Student Union Special Events Center. 7 and 9 p.m. Boise State Student Programs Board will show the film “Borat,” a controversial comedy that follows Kazakh character Borat Sagdiyev around America. SPB will show the film again Feb. 16 at 7 and 9 p.m. This film is rated “R.” Free for Boise State students, $1 for non-students. Call 426-3835.

“Sex: Beyond the Birds and the Bees.” Student Union Hatch Ballroom. 7 p.m. Keynote speakers Rachel Olson and Lorraine Fortunati will discuss the many factors that influence sexuality and sexual decision-making. Part of Volunteer Services Board’s Youth Issues Awareness Week. Free. Call 426-4240.

FRIDAY, FEB. 16
George Lopez. Morrison Center. 8 p.m. George Lopez is one of the premier comedic talents in the entertainment industry today. He is the co-creator, writer, producer and star of the television sitcom, “George Lopez.” Tickets $39.50-$45.50 available through Select-a-Seat.

Czech Nonet. Morrison Center Recital Hall. 8 p.m. Founded in 1924, Czech Nonet is one of the oldest continuously performing string ensembles of its type in the world. Appearing Feb. 16 as part of the Boise Chamber Music Series and Feb. 17 as part of the Classic Performances Series. $25 general, $20 seniors and students by calling 426-1216 or e-mailing jbelfy@boisestate.edu.

SATURDAY, FEB. 17
Wilderness First Aid. Feb. 17-19. City of Boise Foothills Learning Center. This 24-hour seminar is being taught by the Wilderness Medicine Training Center and will certify the participants in the internatitonally recognized Willderness First Aid curriculum. Cost is $179. Czech Nonet: “A Little Morning Music.” Morrison Center rooms C125 (winds) and C200 (strings). 10:30 a.m. These chamber music classes are free. Czech Nonet, one of the oldest continuously performing string ensembles of its type, will appear in the Student Union Special Events Center at 8 p.m. Part of the Classic Performances Series. $10 general, $5 Boise State students, faculty, staff, non-Boise State students younger than 17 and seniors 55 and older. Every Body is Beautiful Week. Feb. 20-22. This educational campaign is designed to raise awareness and offer resources for those struggling with body image and/or eating disorders. Participate in workshops and receive information and giveaways at the Student Union Building, Student Recreation Center and residence halls. Free. Call 426-1459.

“Nature and Technology in One Hundred Years of Solitude.” Student Union Hatch D Ballroom. 4:30 p.m. Professor Raymond L. Williams, an internationally recognized scholar of the Columbian novel and contemporary Latin American fiction, will present this lecture. Williams’ lecture will examine García Márquez’s acclaimed novel. Presented by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the Boise State Cultural Center. Free. Call 426-2595.

Paul Arthur. Idaho State Historical Museum. 7 p.m. Northern Irish historian Paul Arthur will speak on “The Role of Memory in the Northern Irish Conflict.” Presented by the Idaho Historical Museum, the Idaho Public Archives and Research Library, the departments of History and Sociology at Boise State University, the Boise State Honors Program, and the Western Institute for Irish Studies. NAACP Presentation. Student Union Barnwell Room. 7-9 p.m. Part of Black History Month. A local NAACP chapter representative will talk about the organization. Free. Call 426-5950.

Concert Band. Skyview High School. 7:30 p.m. This joint concert with the Skyview High School Concert Band will feature John Williams’ arrangement of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Americans We” by Henry Fillmore, Bach’s “Fugue a la Gigue” and “Noisy Wheels of Joy” by Eric Whitacre. “Man of La Mancha.” Morrison Center Stage II. 7:30 p.m. The Boise State University Department of Theatre Arts will present this highly romantic and noble tale of a man who dreams of conquering all the wrongs in the world and winning the heart of his cherished Dulcinea. This event will also take place Feb. 22-24 and Feb. 27-March 3 at 7:30 p.m. as well as Feb. 25 and March 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets $16 general, $12 for non-Boise State students, alumni and seniors and $9 when purchased in groups of 10 or more. Regina Carter. Morrison Center. 8 p.m. The Bridge Gala, presented by the Idaho Black History Museum, features Regina Carter. She has had an enviable career marked by eclectic virtuosity, heart and stunning fusions of music both celestially classical and earthily modern. Tickets $45-$65 through Select-a-Seat. FRIDAY, FEB. 23
“The Vagina Monologues.” Student Union Special Events Center. 7 p.m. The Boise State Women’s Center, in the Division of Student Affairs, presents its annual production of “The Vagina Monologues” by Eve Ensler, directed by Melody Sky Eisler. This year’s performance includes a new monologue. This event also takes place Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. Tickets $10 general, $6 students with valid ID. Proceeds benefit awareness and anti-violence events. Call 426-4259.

Young Ambassadors. Morrison Center. 7:30 p.m. Since entering the world stage at Japan’s Expo ’70, the Young Ambassadors have performed their vibrant blend of song and dance in 56 nations of the world. Tickets $15.50 adults, $11.50 children through Select-a-Seat. Call 426-1494.

SATURDAY, FEB. 24
International Food, Song and Dance Festival. Student Union Jordan Ballroom. 6 p.m. Boise State invites the community to discover the “Treasures of the World.” The university’s international students organize this event, which features cultures, customs and cuisine from around the world.
