Boise State Awards Greeks

Boise State University hosted the third annual Greek Formal Dinner last week at the Student Union, where awards for excellence were presented. Boise State students Kristen Singleton and Joseph DeMay and Alpha Xi Delta sorority were among the honorees. Greek alumna Kathy Kustra, wife of Boise State President Robert Kustra, was the keynote speaker.

Singleton, an elementary education major from Meridian, was named Greek Woman of the Year. Singleton has served as the president of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and held varied leadership roles across campus. She represented Boise State at the Western Regional Greek Conference last year. Singleton also organized an effort by her sorority last October to provide programming for domestic violence awareness. Alpha Chi Omega raised $700 for that effort, and hosted the nationally recognized speaker Andrea Cooper, who spoke about helping survivors of sexual assault.

DeMay, a criminal justice major from San Jose, Calif., was named Greek Man of the Year. DeMay, a member of Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity, has held several leadership roles in his fraternity including vice president and fraternal educator. Actively involved in many student organizations, DeMay is a member of the Criminal Justice Honor Society, Gamma Beta Phi honor society and the Order of Omega Greek honor society. He is a veteran of the U.S. Marines.

Alpha Xi Delta sorority was recognized for academic excellence, achieving a cumulative chapter GPA of 3.01 in the fall 2006 semester.

Four groups were recognized for meritorious achievement. Alpha Chi Omega sorority received an honor for raising awareness of domestic violence issues. Delta Beta Nu sorority sponsored a daylong workshop to help disadvantaged teen girls prepare for college, done in partnership with the Silver Sage Girl Scouts. Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity received honors for successfully achieving full chapter status. Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority, Boise State’s first Latina sorority, was honored for their rapid recognition as an organization.

Boise State is home to three fraternities, four sororities, a Panhellenic Council governing sororities and the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society.
