Boise State College of Engineering Celebrates National Engineers Week Feb. 20-25

Boise State University’s College of Engineering will celebrate National Engineers Week Feb. 20-25 with a variety of events, including guest lectures by industry leaders, the second annual “Calculator Crunch” contest and a presentation by the Discovery Channel’s “MythBusters.”

National Engineers Week is a program that promotes engineering as a profession and celebrates the creative contributions engineers make to improve the quality of life worldwide. The week is also part of the BSU College of Engineering’s yearlong celebration of its 10th anniversary.

Highlights of National Engineers Week include:

• Caleb Chung, inventor of the robotic toys “Furby” and “Pleo” and co-founder of the California-based company Ugobe, will speak on “The Intersection of Design and Engineering” at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, in Room 110 of the Engineering and Technology Building at Boise State. The ET building is located on the corner of University Drive and Manitou Street. The public is invited.

• Ralph R. Peterson, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of CH2M HILL will speak on “Engineering a Better World” at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, in Room 110 of the Engineering and Technology Building. The public is invited.

• Mark Durcan, chief operating officer of Micron Technology Inc., will speak on “Defining Tomorrow’s Technology” at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, in Room 110 of the Engineering and Technology Building. The public is invited.

• The second annual “Calculator Crunch” will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, on the patio adjacent to the College of Engineering complex. Students, faculty and industry members are invited to form teams and compete to see how effectively they can throw and destroy their old, outdated, obsolete or simply out of favor calculators. Celebrity judges will tally scores, prizes will be awarded and free pizza will be available for participants. Deadline to sign up is Wednesday, Feb. 21. • The Discovery Channel’s “MythBusters,” Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, will be featured at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25 at the Taco Bell Arena. The event is free but tickets are required. An additional 1,000 tickets for the show will be distributed to the public on a first-come basis starting at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at the Taco Bell Arena box office. The public can obtain a maximum of four tickets per person.
