Two Short Films Celebrate Women's History Month

The Boise State Women’s Center, TVTV and The Flicks Movie Theatres invite you to celebrate Women’s History Month at the exclusive Boise screening of two award-winning short films, “I Was a Teenage Feminist” and “Mohawk Girls.” The screenings will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Boise State University sociology professor Ginna Husting, Marty Durand of the Idaho Women’s Network and Gloria Munoz of United Vision for Idaho.

The screenings are at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at The Flicks, 646 Fulton St. Tickets are $11 and are available at TVTV or at The Flicks. Visit www.tvctvonline.org or call 343-1100 for more information.

“I Was a Teenage Feminist” explores why many young, independent, progressive women today feel uncomfortable identifying with the “F-word.” Filmmaker Therese Shechter takes us on a funny, moving journey into the heart of feminism. Armed with a video camera and an irreverent sense of humor, Shechter talks with feminist superstars, rowdy frat boys, liberated Cosmo girls and radical cheerleaders in her quest to find out whether feminism can still be a source of personal and political power.

“Mohawk Girls” is a deeply emotional yet unsentimental look into what it means to grow up as a Native American at the beginning of the 21st century. Filmmaker Tracey Deer intimately captures the lives of three exuberant and insightful Mohawk teenagers as they return from school to their families in the Kahnawake Native Reserve. The three teens are contending with the unwritten rules of their close-knit community. To move away from the reserve means you risk losing your credibility, or worse, your rights as a Mohawk. But to stay is to give up the possibilities offered by the “outside world.” With insight, humor and compassion, Deer takes us inside the lives of these three teenagers as they tackle the same issues of identity, culture and family she herself faced a decade earlier.
