Boise State Alum, Small Business Owner Hopes to Build on Success with $100,000 Contribution to Business Building

A Boise State University alum and his wife have pledged $100,000 toward a new College of Business and Economics building at Boise State University, noting that they want to build on recent success at the university.

Allen Dykman said he and his wife, Dixie, took note of a recent $12.5 million gift from the Micron Technology Foundation to the new building and $5 million in matching dollars that the foundation offered.

“I am happy to give back to Boise State, a school that has given me so much pride over the years and played an instrumental role in my development and in giving me a competitive edge in the business world,” Allen Dykman said. “I believe the Boise State school of business has the ability to rank in the upper echelon of business schools, similar to what the Boise State College of Engineering has done.”

A conference room in the new building will be named after the Dykmans to honor their contribution.

Dykman was a member of the Bronco football team from 1969-73 and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1974. In 1981 he founded Dykman Electrical Inc. in Boise. The wholesale operation resells electrical equipment and supplies to distributors, industrial accounts and electrical equipment builders. The company has warehouses in Seattle, Portland, Spokane, Sacramento, Denver, Salt Lake City and Boise, with a sales force of 50.

Dykman has been very involved with Boise State and the Boise community. He joined the Boise State Foundation board in 1989, serving on the executive committee for eight years, and then as president from 2001-04. He served as Alumni Association president from 1984-85; Bronco Athletic Association president from 1997-98; and as Hillcrest Country Club president from 2001-02.
He also has a family endowed scholarship for football players who major in business at Boise State.

Dykman is the second alum in recent weeks to come forward with a large donation for the new business building. Doyle Heaton, a 1961 Boise Junior College alum who lives in California, pledged $250,000 after receiving a mailing from the university that included a front page USA Today article on Boise State and news of the Micron Technology Foundation donation.

The proposed building will be located at the corner of Capitol Boulevard and University Drive and will serve as a gateway to the university from the west. Current budget projections are for a total project cost of $31 million. The university plans to seek approval for the project from the State Board of Education early this year. Pending approval and success in raising additional funds, construction could begin as early as spring 2008.
