Boise State Production of 'In the Sawtooths' to Travel to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival

The Boise State University production of “In the Sawtooths,” a play written by Theatre Arts alumnus Dano Madden, has been invited to stage the play at the national Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Washington, D.C. “In the Sawtooths” will be performed on April 21-22 at the Kennedy Center. “In the Sawtooths” was one of only five productions nationwide to be invited.

“For university theatre programs across the country, there is no larger national spotlight or honor than to be invited to the national festival at the Kennedy Center,” said Richard Klautsch, chair of the Theatre Arts Department. “Basically, it’s our Fiesta Bowl.”

In addition to the invitation to the Kennedy Center festival, Madden was awarded the National Student Playwriting Award. He graduated from Boise State in 1997 and is currently working toward his master’s at Rutgers University.

“In the Sawtooths” is the story of three extremely close friends living in contemporary Idaho. They must face a tragic accident and its effects on their relationships. Madden developed “In the Sawtooths” at the Seven Devils Playwriting conference in McCall, and the play has received readings at the Northwest Playwright’s Alliance, the Midtown International Theatre Festival, and the Boise Contemporary Theatre.

“In the Sawtooths” was performed in late September and early October 2006 at Boise State University. The production that will travel to the Kennedy Center includes Theatre Arts professor Micheal Baltzell; scenic designer and Theatre Arts major Erin Haight; Theatre Arts professor and costume designer Ann Hoste; lighting designer and Theatre Arts professor Genny Wynn; sound designer and Music major Kirstie Williams; and cast members and students Loren Jones, Kyle Barrow and Dylan Hughes.
