Boise State University Announces Selection for Veterans Memorial Monument at the Student Union Building

Boise State University’s new Veterans Memorial at the Student Union Building will feature an installation by Kay Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick’s proposal, “Salute,” was ultimately chosen as the finalist after the art advisory board reviewed public commentary. Voting was opened up to the public last month.

Kirkpatrick’s “Salute” will be a metal-and-stone sculpture featuring the silhouette of a soldier saluting. In her artist’s proposal, Kirkpatrick wrote “The salute as a gesture symbolizes both answering to duty and the individual who places working toward the benefit of others above themselves.”

The university decided to honor veterans by installing an exterior site-specific permanent art memorial as part of the Student Union expansion project, which has yet to be completed. Last fall a request for proposals was sent to more than 4,000 artists. Two artists were chosen from the submissions. Each finalist submitted a final proposal, including a three-dimensional scale model, a descriptive narrative concerning the artist’s conceptual approach, a projected timeline, and a proposed budget.

“I am excited to see Kay Kirkpatrick’s Veterans Memorial proposal come to fruition,” said Holly Gilchrist, Student Activities Program coordinator for Fine Arts. “Her permanent art installation will be a great asset to Boise State’s campus. It will not only be a distinguished art form for reflection and interaction, but more importantly it will memorialize all of those individuals who have served this country so selflessly.”

Kirkpatrick lives and works in Seattle but has many relatives in Idaho. Several members of her family have served in the military. She received her BFA from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and her MFA from Wichita State in Kansas.

“Salute” is tentatively scheduled to be dedicated in August 2008. For more information, call Holly Gilchrist at (208) 426-1223 or hollygilchrist@boisestate.edu.
