Boise State Visiting Artist Workshops Focus on Art Metals
Two workshops at Boise State University by visiting artists will focus on art
metals. Eleanor Moty will present “Bench Tips for Metalsmiths” from 10 a.m.-5
p.m. April 14 and Yuyen Chang will present “Organic Forms in Metal” from 10
a.m.-5 p.m. April 28-29. Both workshops are free of charge, but registration is
required and the Chang workshop is open only to full-time students.
Moty’s workshop is a compilation of helpful systems and bench working tips that
she has developed or happened upon during her many years of teaching and
constructing jewelry and small metal objects. Moty will cover a variety of
topics, from devising soldering jigs to designing alternative pinning systems.
She also will discuss the methods of designing and constructing her
one-of-a-kind brooches.
Chang’s hands-on workshop will explore organic forms using various techniques,
including die-forming, dapping, raising, forming over pitch and high-relief
chasing. Students will learn to see the metal as a mass of material and
understand how it can be moved like clay. By the end of the workshop, students
will have completed a non-geometric three-dimensional form. Some basic hand-toll
knowledge and soldering experience required.
